After thinking about how much I'm paying for a slow Business DSL connection and two phone lines, I've decided to switch over to a 50/10 cable connection cut out expenses since money is really tight right now.I've been using Ooma for about 4 years. Free Home Phone Service | Ooma
The house phones see very little use and I no longer need a business class line. I have a reasonably nice POTS wireless phone system with five handsets that I would like to continue using and a fax machine.
What do you guys recommend for a basic, no frills and inexpensive VoIP that will work with the Sophos UTM Home Edition here in the States?
Sophos will be installed on an i5 four core box with 4GB RAM.
Thanks!

BTW, I had a lot of noise on the POTS system at one condo I was in with VOIP hooked up; it's recommended to unhook the POTS wires from the telco on the outside of the house, and connect them together (twist both wires of a single line together). However, it didn't really help the noise at the condo.
I had better luck at an apartment with the same equipment, and later at 2 houses with the broadvoice equipment.

I'm not quite understanding you. Are you saying you were using only VoIP and the POTS wiring was causing noise? Were you using the POTS wiring to connect your phones to one another and to the VoIP box?
The POTS phone device I want to hook up to a VoIP has 5 wireless handsets so only the base needs to be plugged into the VoIP device. I do not need to use the POTS wires.
And your fax will be in the same room as the VOIP adapter and the phone?

If you're in a FiOS area, I highly recommend it over cable.

Thank you [:)]I'm using the Basic service, which has all the features I need. I have it sitting behind Sophos UTM.
Ooma looks pretty good. Are you using the Basic or Premium service and do you have it going through Sophos? Have you tried to use a FAX machine with it?
