Inexpensive VoIP solution

After thinking about how much I'm paying for a slow Business DSL connection and two phone lines, I've decided to switch over to a 50/10 cable connection cut out expenses since money is really tight right now.

The house phones see very little use and I no longer need a business class line. I have a reasonably nice POTS wireless phone system with five handsets that I would like to continue using and a fax machine.

What do you guys recommend for a basic, no frills and inexpensive VoIP that will work with the Sophos UTM Home Edition here in the States?

Sophos will be installed on an i5 four core box with 4GB RAM.

    Since we have friends and family in Europe and the Caribbean, Vonage behind Astaro is the lowest net cost for us at home.  It's VoIP to the Vonage device and then analog  to our regular cordless phones.  It's also less expensive and more convenient for reaching business contacts in India and Australia.  The iPhone App lets me make those calls from anywhere I can find WiFi.  I let my wife have the App that doesn't require WiFi.

    I still have reservations. I'm considering dropping my current Business DSL connection and phones lines in favor of a much faster Comcast connection and an inexpensive VoIP.

    Do you notice any latency in the VoIP?

    no latency at all.  I went from Comcast Xfinity 25D / 5U to AT&T U-Verse with 12D / 3U and voice quality was/is excellent.  Not really necessary, but I have setup QoS on the External (WAN) with a bandwidth pools of 512kb upper bandwidth limit as recommended by Ooma.  On the traffic selectors I have the following setup

    Source (Ooma Telo Host - network definition)
    Service (Ooma VoIP - service definition)
    Dest (Any)

    Ooma VoIP is a service definition with the following members (DNS (53), GPRS SIG (3386), HTTPS (443), Network Data management (10000:30000), NTP, OpenVPN, POP3, Secure Virtual Workspace (3480), STUN (3478), SYSLOG)

    As for International, I purchase a Telo activated with a local phone# and sent it overseas in Asia to a family member with broadband and our calls to each other are totally free and clear.  A new Ooma app on the iOS device is coming soon.

    I had lunch yesterday with a former employee that's now doing consulting for small businesses.  He sells/installs Jive, a cloud-based VoIP supplier.  I don't the other charges, but for a single phone that you own, the monthly is on the order of $25 (plus taxes, I assume).

    I have had vonage forever and it works great behind astaro. The voice quality is great and they support faxes although I have never sent one. My bill is around 30 bucks a month with all the calls to land lines and others including UK.
     
    Like Bob, I have a lot of friends and family overseas and I gifted magic jack magicJack  to most of them. With a decent broadband connection, you wouldn't know that its an overseas call with magic jack. And it is way cheaper than anything else out there.

    I have clients use skype..it's free to other skype users..and its everywhere.  I have a couple of clients who are here stateside and they have kids in the missionary field in africa..where dial up is available on a good day.  Video doesn't work but audio works fine..[:)]

    I use my own Voip Server [3CX Phone System - Software Based VoIP IP PBX / PABX for Windows behind  Astaro. I have two phones in NY and 4 in Albania the quality is very good (8 mbps donw 1 up) In this server you can put trunk or Skype numbers...

    we use a hosted voip service (so no extra equipment)  I have about 14 cisco 7960's and we run off a cable 15/5 with no problem

    Ooma looks pretty good. Are you using the Basic or Premium service and do you have it going through Sophos? Have you tried to use a FAX machine with it?


    While the qeustion was not in response to my post, I did run an OOMA through Sophos for a while.

    Sophos was homebuilt with AMD dual core 2.8Ghz cpu, 4 GB ram and SSD.  FAX through OOMA worked fine as long as Web filtering / IPS was turned off. If IPS was turned on, then faxing would fail.  (I assume it was a latency or timing issue).  My solution was to install another nic into Sophos box and use the seperate NIC just for OOMA with no Web filtering / IPS.

    Have used OOMA now for three years with no problem.  Basic only as do not need a 2nd phone #.
