Vpn works but no servers by name only ip

How do you have DNS set up?

We do not have internal dns

So, with no internal ability to do name resolution, why do you expect to be able to use anything other than numeric IPs?

My network kungfu is not great but I assumed the router handled the internal DNS  (as I did not set up anything for the main network  and that will resolve internal network names )

I guessed it would just pass through the VPN tunnel as part of the router and the VPN being the same device

With that said

Hmmm.  Well, maybe something was configured automatically.  Tell us a little more about your network.  Windows Server?  Active Directory?

ISP cox with a static ip (cable modem)

I have an asg120 w/ wireless ap

I have 2 switchs 
1x 10/100/1000
1x 10/100 poe (cisco)


a bunch of voip phones (cisco 7960's) and some windows 7 laptops

I have a windows home server (static ip)
and a windows small biz server (static ip)


nothing fancy

I'm thinking Netbios name resolution is in play here and it's known for not playing nicely (if at all) across subnets. In the absence of a WINS server, it uses broadcast packets to find hosts, which don't hop subnets.

would the hosts file be able to take care of this if i knew all the mappings

also i noticed that win7 has a netbois over tcp/ip would that work?

I know the Small Business Server can do DNS, and I bet the Home Server would have it, too.  Check whichever one is doing Active Directory - I bet DNS is running there, and that you only need to add the IP of the server to the settings in 'Remote Access >> Advanced'.

but would i still need to point the vpn computer to that dns or should it pick up the new dns server automaticly from the vpn connection?

ill try it out wednesday and let you know
