IPv6 and DHCPv6

Hi y'all,

I know the Astaro supports DHCPv6 once IPv6 is enabled and the "Other config" option is checked ( as per https://community.sophos.com/products/unified-threat-management/astaroorg/f/102/t/69202 ) however what if I want to use a different DHCPv6 server?

In the scenario I have, I want the DHCPv6 to be managed by Active Directory.  This would create a situation much like many organisations today - the firewall is managed by group A (network / firewall group) and DHCP is managed by the group B (Wintel / Active Directory team).

This may be a feature request?  However I was wondering first if it is possible to host the prefix on the Astaro but point the DHCPv6 at Active Directory...?

    As you can with DHCPv4, you can just use DHCPv6 on your DC(s) and not even use your Astaro for DHCP.  DHCP requests are done by broadcast, so your clients will pick up on whatever server is available.  You don't even need to use prefix assignment for link-local addresses as long as your IPv6 service provider (ISP or Tunnel Broker) provides you with a subnet from which you can use DHCPv6 to hand out addresses.

    Yup, that's true and I tried that.  However thanks to having a Heterogenous environment it's not working as I'd like.

    Apple do not support DHCPv6, however they have 'full support for IPv6' - as it turns out that means they respond to stateless (Router Advertisements) but not stateful (DHCPv6) autoconfiguration.

    Then I read about the ManageFlag parameter and how that could provide a DHCPv6 address and hope sored.  Would it be possible to use RA's to provide for those addresses that do not (currently) support DHCPv6 yet still have those machines that *do* support DHCPv6 work?  Would it be possible to have them both running at the same time, using stateless autoconfiguration as a failback in case the guest does not support DHCPv6 (in which case it would ignore the ManagedFlag configuration parameter anyway).

    Hence my question.

    That's my specific scenario, however I'm sure that in time there'll be others out that with different scenario's but with the same requirement.  IPv6 prefix RA's on the Astaro but with the ability to point the clients to a different DHCPv6 server.

    I went digging into the RFC's a bit.  It depends on the interplay between the settings for the M and O flags how addresses are allocated.   IPv6 Address Autoconfiguration how to install study guide

    The O flag is already configurable from the WebAdmin GUI, Astaro would just need to implement M flag configuration for your requirements to work.

    Hi folks,
    there is good news on the MAC front. I have just installed and run LION on my MAC Book Pro and it now gets an IPv6 from the ASG DHCPv6 server automatically.
    I would have entered this post with the MAC except I don't have the forum password on the MAC.

    Hi,


    I tried to setup Astaro and Windows DHCPv6. It is not working, because Astaro has to advertise his Prefix to the Internal network, saying please use DHCPv6 to get an address.

    An DHCPv6 Server is not able to send routing Information (default gateway). With IPv6 this is part of the router.
