Video on Demand pixelates with ASG but with Actiontec

I've got FiOS internet and TV. When watching video on demand (VOD) it will pixelate and some times the sound will cut out.
A little background.
I had ASG 8.003 installed on the hardware in my sig. Speed tests show a solid 30Mbits up and down. But I would get pixelation when watching VOD. No other internet activity was going on at the moment. No big down loads or anything like that. I had Verizon send a tech out. He was open minded and didn't just assume it was my ASG causing the pixelation. He tried several things. The last was to switch me back to the Axtiontec rev F router. Pixelation was fixed.
My ASG wasn't running IPS or TCP syn or UDP flood protection. I checked the cards for dropped packets (ifconfig eth0) etc. Showed no dropped packets or other problems.

Has anyone else had things like this happen while watching VOD?

    The open ports are for Remote DVR functionality. They don't affect the streaming of VOD. Even after heavy pixelation, the NICs don't show that any packets have been dropped. I know I could just put my ASG after the Actiontec, but that's a workaround for some sort of shortcoming in ASG. I was suspect when it was suggested that my 1 GHz mini-itx system or a P3-1GHz were not up to the task of routing just 15Mbps. But your AMD 4400+ should be more than capable of routing even more traffic than that. It's not a horsepower issue. There's something "off" in ASG that makes it less capable than the Actiontec for streaming video.

    The shortcoming is the vz setup there's nothing wrong with the astaro software.  The other shortcoming is your hardware.  the nics aren't going to be dropping things..your cpu is.  Also you say ram usage is low..what's your swap usage?  Remember you need ram for every packet..your woefully short on both ram and cpu.  get a faster box with at least 1 gig  of ram 2 is really best.  Also if you aren't using intel/3com/broadcom nics you are using software(aka cpu driven) nics.  this will place an additional burden on your system.
