Astaro Branded 1U Server Box

Wow that's cheap.

If I'm reading wikipedia correctly, that Celeron 420 CPU is a 'Core'-based Celeron, so it'd be much faster than a single-core Atom, albeit at much higher wattage (35w instead of 4w for the CPU). And the CPU is replaceable with up to an Core2 Conroe E6000 series or Xeon 3000 series!

Warning: the 'raid' controller says Windows only, and being an ich7, definitely can't be used in 'raid' mode with (at least the software version of) Astaro.


Does anyone know:
1. Where these are coming from? And why? 
It doesn't look like any Astaro model I'm familiar with.

2. total power consumption?

3. fans / noise levels?

As far as power consumption, I'm going to estimate its below 100 watts. I bet if you replaced the internal power supply with a picopsu, being that the Celeron 420 is fairly low power chip, you could probably decrease power consumption even more.....

I do know Intel just released a Dual-Core atom board called the D510, and I am yet to find out if ASG supports it. But it supports DDR2 800 upto 4GB of memory with a much newer and faster chipset than the archaic D945 found in older more power hungry Atom boards...no dual Ethernet, but just add a second nic and you would good to go!

Just found this about the '946gz' Intel chipet:

Chipset TDP is 26 watts, plus 3.3 watts for the ich7, plus 35 watts for the CPU, plus RAM, HD, NICs, and power supply inefficiencies, would probably come to 80-100 watts peak (TDP ratings are roughly the peak power levels). Not bad. Upgrading to a much faster 65 watt Core2 or Xeon would only raise that by another 30 watts!

Looking further down that page, they give a "System TDP" of 64.3 Watts with the Celeron 420 (not counting Hard Drive, RAM, etc.).

Also noticed that a CDROM drive isn't included, so a USB drive would probably be most practical unless a cheap slim drive could be found that fits.

Those are a model platform from the AMG/AWG line. And for home use, you better have a good server room since they are pretty loud and far from quiet [:)]. They have chipset raid yes, but we use a 3ware raid card in them as well which that box probably has unless they removed it...good luck!

So who actually produces these units? I can't find any info from Supermicro *or* Astaro and that unit looks nothing like the ASG unit's I've seen.

If they are made through Astaro, how can my Astaro partner order one? My little Atom is adequate for our needs but I can justify upgrading to a Core2. [:)]

If these are an Astaro reference board as claimed, Does the power supply support north american standard 115V?

I doubt you'd be able to get one through an Astaro partner without buying an Astaro Mail Gateway license.

If you're looking for one cheap for home use, or for the free Essentials edition, you'd probably have to order it from geeks.com.

Their site lists

So, it should work anywhere.

Actually, Barry, there's a new licensing model beginning Feb. 1st.  ASG appliances can now be purchased separately.  After the introduction of the free Essential Firewall Base License (Stateful Firewall, NAT, PPTP & L2TP Remote Access, Local Authentication, Local Logging, Essential Reporting) last year, Astaro decided to unbundle Network Security, for which there is now a separate subscription to get Intrusion Prevention, IPSec/SSL VPN & Remote Access, VoIP Security, Advanced Routing, Advanced Networking, User Portal, Remote Authentication, Remote Logging, Advanced Reporting and HA.

In the US, until March 29th, resellers can sell based on the old or new model, so if you are anywhere near renewal time, you might want to ask your reseller to see if it would be less-expensive for you to renew under the old model.  I just did a renewal for a customer with the new model since it was cheaper because they qualified for a promotion.

Are you saying resellers would be able to sell this SuperMicro appliance? Would the price still be under $200?

How much would a base ASG120 or 220 be under the new pricing?

Barry, it works out to about the same; that appliance that the OP is posting about is or is going to be discontinued; the ASG appliances we are all familiar with are available separately, and can be used with the essential license; when you add the features (network protection, etc.) the prices are pretty much the same, we are just getting a lot more flexibility in how the product is sold.

Premium Support is roughly equivalent to the old "Platinum Maintenance" agreement.

Barry, I'll email you privately about pricing on the appliances (Barry is a customer of mine)... the thing is, you can buy the appliance, and install the essential license on it for free... but you can't load a regular per user software license on it with Network Protection, you have to use the ASG120/220 etc. subscription on it.  Bear in mind that the Essential firewall license does not include IPS, Site to Site VPN, SSL VPN, Reporting, automated up2dates, etc.

So I finally have one of these little beats in my hot little hands and I must say I'm impressed. It's a noisy beast but at $320cdn (including shipping & customs) it's comparable in price to the Atom I built a few months ago. It'll be going into our main office tomorrow to replace the Atom I currently have and the Atom is going to another task I have for it.

Now if only shipping weren't so darn expensive...[:D]
