Astaro Security Gateway freezes every forth night

HI All,

I have notist for the last couple months that my Firewall crashes without any error logs etc. It just completely freezes. The Executive Report is just blank in the periode from the crash till I reboot the box. Just before it stops working I don't see any unusual behaviour in the logs.

Can this be a memory leak?

What happened:
- no pings to wan ip & dmz ip from lan
- no ssh from both wan & lan
- no web interface from both wan & lan
- no traffic trhough the firewall possible
- ping to lan ip is working

after reboot (by reboot switch) all works fine again...

    When I was first learning Astaro, I had a client with the same complaint.  Nothing strange in the logs, but the Executive Report showed a petabit of traffic volume.

    It turned out that I had mis-configured IPS.  The lesson: Never put External anything in 'Local Networks' - only 'Internal (Network)', 'DMZ (Network)' and any other purely-internal networks.

    Other than that, it sounds like a hardware problem.

    hi bob,

    only lan, dmz, untrusted networks (all private networks) are in the ips, no wan is included. there is no petabit of traffic volume in the logs before the freeze.

    will have a look at the hardware but when in this state the lan nic is still responding on pings from lan. pinging from lan to dmz, untrusted or wan is timimg out. when looking at the cable modem data lights they are off but the ethernet link light is on. but that's probally due the fact that there is still power on the astaro box.

    today i crashed again so i took the time to hook up an monitor to see what's happening on the screen.

    journal commit I/O error

    and nothing is responding when typing on the keyboard. i rebooted the box with spinride to check the hard disk and let it run. spinride found a couple bad sectors and recovered them. so it looks like i'm in the market for a new hard disk.

    now i'm thinking to change it with a ssd drive.

    any one here who used these drives with astaro?

    change out the hdd with a regular one don't need ssd

    have now bought an 120gb sata for £30 incl p&p [:)]

    just to let you all know that with this new hard disc no problems has been detected

    so all fine again [:)]
