Verizon FiOS info / FAQs

I have FIOS triple play with 35/35. I have the coax connected to my current wireless router provided by Verizon. I have not setup my ASG yet. My primary reason for considering setting it up is to us it for experimenting with IPv6. I thought I would use a tunnel broker and the ASG to accomplish this. Has anyone done this? I was looking for some help and ideas before doing this. Obviously it would be best if the ASG was getting the IP address from Verizon and was first in line, but I know this would cause problems with my TV. Since this is more of an experiment, I would rather not mess too much with the current setup.

I have FIOS Tripple Play with 35/35. 

I have the ONT connected to Astaro directly via cat 6. 
I have the Astaro's output going into a HP Procurve gigabit switch.
The Actiontec router is plugged into the switch and using subnet 1.
The STB is plugged into the AT router via coax. (Guide and VOD)
Everything else is plugged into the HP Procurve switch on subnet 2.

I have subnet 1 bypassing the proxy, but using the firewall.

My Astaro is a dual core 2.x ghz with 2 gigs of RAM. Input NIC is the motherboard one with the internal NIC is from Intel. 

When I play On demand TV it is fine, so long as I do  not surf. Just refreshing a web page causes me issues. It was not like this under Verizon, but became this way a few months after Frontier took over. It does not matter if I am using the AT router to surf or my internal network to surf. So, going through the proxy does not matter. 

I am going to install a dual NIC and put the Actiontec router on a totally isolated network with no proxy, no firewal - nothing. I will see if that helps. I have to order a low profile dual Intel NIC so it will be a week or two before I get it and install it. 

I will let you know what happens.

I have added the dual NIC and set one of the ports up as a Frontier Router only network. Once I set the Masquerading up (Frontier network --> External (WAN) and setup a firewall rule to let the Frontier network out to the Internet I was able to fix 99.8% of my VOD issues. I also setup a block in the firewall that kept the Frontier network from going to my internal network. The firewall rule to block was not needed to make it work, just to keep Frontier off my network.

Unfortunately, the concensus seems to be that Frontier sucks [:(]

Yup. I had to get the Man in charge of the entire Midwest involved to get my other FIOS issues fixed. They are getting worked out slowly...

I don't.  I live in MA, so I have verizon itself.  I have talked to folks online who have frontier on other forums and they hate it.

I am not sure what Frontier did, but whatever it was it hosed my VOD performance. They claim they did nothing, but it only went bad a few months after they took over for Verizon. That is when they totally took over... it appears that I have it working now, but not after fighting with them for months on end. They had to replace EVERYTHING in my house... STB, router, ONT, battery backup and the cables! Even though that made the issues less of an issue, it still sucked. I had to buy a dual NIC and give them their own network in the Astaro to get it to work correctly.

Coder68, can you clarify your current setup a bit? Mostly curious if you had to setup any special rules/etc aside from allowing traffic out.

Update: SMTP relay settings, MOCA, etc.

I'm finally back on FiOS again after moving residences twice... They're now blocking outgoing SMTP (unless you have a business account) so for Astaro email notifications and backups to work, you have to configure Verizon's SMTP relay in Astaro's Notifications settings (Management -> Notifications -> Advanced).
There's miscellaneous info online, not all of which seems to work, so here's the details:

SMTP Server: outgoing.verizon.net  (hit '+' to add as a DNS HOST DEFINITION)
SMTP Port: 25   (or 587)
Use TLS: UNCHECKED  (I tested, it won't work with TLS)

SMTP Authentication (REQUIRED)
Use your 'My Verizon' login (username and password), NOT your verizon email address.

Note: Verizon says to use 'smtp.verizon.net' on port 465, but I cannot get Astaro (9.003) to use port 465, and that server will not accept connections on ports 25 or 587.

Other notes:
The FiOS ordering system is not the same as it was in 2009 when I originally created this thread... it was impossible for me to pre-communicate to them that I wanted an Ethernet Handoff... the best I could get out of them is that the installer would be able to deal with it. It turns out he did deal with it, but said I would be charged an extra $50 for the cat5 run to the office (which isn't unreasonable. I didn't verify if I was actually charged).

When I unplugged the Actiontec Router and plugged in my Astaro firewall, I had to call to "break the dhcp lease". The rep said she would 'run the diagnostic test', but it did work.

I also have FiOS TV and phone now (I didn't before). The phone setup is independent of the firewall or Actiontec router.

For TV, it turns you don't need the router (aka MOCA bridge) if all your TVs have viable QAM tuners and you don't need any premium/encrypted channels.
One of my TVs has QAM but it doesn't work with FiOS for some reason, so I have to have a STB.
The STB will not turn on if the ActionTec router/MOCA bridge is not online. Once the STB is booted (and as long as the power doesn't go out, but the STB can be turned off (sleep) ), it will work without the ActionTec, but the EPG (channel guide) will not work.

I was able to plug the ActionTec's WAN port into my DMZ, and plug a coax line from one room into the ActionTec, and everything is working now.
I disabled the WiFi on the ActionTec as I have another WiFi AP setup. I did test it first, and the WiFi was still working, but it was NAT'ted of course. 
I didn't try using a LAN port instead of the WAN port on the ActionTec, but I suspect the MOCA bridge may only be on the WAN port.

I was very disappointed with how everything was connected on the outside of the garage (the house already had FiOS installed from a previous resident)... The Fiber line, the power line for the ONT, the ethernet cat5, and the analog phone line (from the ONT to the POTS box) were all exposed on the outside of the house. A burglar could cut the fiber or the POTS line to disable my alarm signaling.
It's strange because usually they install the ONT on the INSIDE of the garage.
Anyways, my alarm guy was able to move everything to the other side of the wall (into the garage), so now only the fiber line is briefly exposed (and the shield is thick enough to be somewhat difficult to cut).

Hello Barry I'm having trouble setting up UTM 9 with FiOS's  Actiontec Router just for VOD and Tv Guide Update's can anyone help me out ? So far I have Internet Access but no tv guide or VOD.
