Verizon FiOS info / FAQs

Anyone wanting to run Astaro with Verizon FiOS should know the following:
1. ask for an "Ethernet Handoff" when you order. Otherwise they will use coax and you'll have to try to figure out how to bridge their router, and you'll be wasting electricity (the wireless router they gave me uses 13 watts).

2. they gave me ethernet into the house, and plugged in their router. When I unplugged it, and plugged in my firewall, I had to call them and get them to "break" the DHCP lease, as the firewall wasn't getting an IP.

3. before I called, the ethernet connection was oscillating between 1000 and 100 mbits. I need to keep an eye on it, but right now it's at 100. If it keeps oscillating I'll try to lock it at 100.

I'm paying for 10mbps in and 4mbps up. So far I'm getting at least 1.1MB in (8.8mbps).

    Forgot to mention. I have the FIOS 35/35 plan as part of a Triple Play package. DSL reports showed 7/7 and speedtest.net showed 49.2/20 . Given the widely divergent numbers, I am waiting until I run some real-world tests before I pass judgement.

    You need to set up the remote DVR functionality before you switch to ASG. The Remote DVR functionality opens ports in your Actiontec that get forwarded to your STBs. There are also configuration changes that get made to your on line account to allow the Verizon servers to connect to your STBs. After the Remote DVR is setup and functioning properly with the Actiontec, configure your ASG with the same DNAT/PAcket filter rules. THEN, in the actiontec, click the "Release IP" button and quickly swap the Actiontec for the ASG. Boot up the ASG. It should work. If your IP address changes between releasing the IP from the Actiontec and booting the ASG, you need to go back to the Actiontec. It's a Pain in the A**. But that's the price to be paid for not using Verizon's router.
    I had a lot of pixelation using the ASG too. But nearly zero pixelation using the Actiontec. I don't understand it either. Speedtest.net shows 28-30Mb up and down.
    I just got Fios installed today. Initially, when i ordered, I requested an Ethernet hand-off and was told the installer would be able to help me. When the installer arrived he had no idea that I had made a request and told me that he did not have the NIM adapter necessary for the setup. After I explained what I wanted and why, he said he could setup the ONT in a non-standard fashion. Basically, he provisioned me for an Ethernet hand off and configured the MoCa to receive internet via Eth instead of Coax. He then setup the Moca to backfeed internet access into the the coax so that my boxes would work. 
    Once he left, I moved the ethernet line to my Astaro and plugged the MoCa into my lan. I then called VZ to break the lease. When I was on the phone, they explained that they did not support Non-Verizon routers. After I explained what I had and that I knew what I was doing, they broke the lease for me. 

    So, now that I have everything in place, I am having a few issues.
    1) OnDemand via my boxes is choppy and pixelated (unwatchable)
    2) Applications to allow for remote DVR programming cannot connect to my box.

    Has anyone had any success with this sort of setup? I am sure it is just a matter of some NAT rules and such, but I have yet to determine what they are.

    Alternatively, you can wait a couple of hours, then plug the ASG WAN cable back in and it should get a lease.  Or spoof the AT's MAC address (unfortunately cannot do that from the gui.)

    Yes. To get the same IP address, you NEED to do a "Release IP" from the Actiontec, then boot your "MAC Cloned" ASG box. Sorry I forgot to mention that. Cloning the MAC is necessary to get the same IP.
    If you wait the 2 hours, you probably won't get the same IP address and your Remote DVR won't work.

    Do you currently have this setup in place? If so could you post the port forwards you have setup? I did not setup the remote DVR functionality yet, but am curious if  it will work in my current config if I simply forward the ports ahead of time.
    Also, where is the "release ip' option on the action tech? I looked briefly before I called VZ and didn't see anything relating to releasing and/or renewing the IP. In my rush, I didn't setup remote management on the ActionTec, so I cannot look at the config without physically connecting (won't be able to for a few hours).
    Once you put the redirects in place, did your VOD performance improved?

    Completely thought that i posted some more info the other day, but apparently I never hit submit.
    I did not have time to undo my setup the other night, so I tried initiating the Remote DVR function, from the STB, while the MoCa was sitting behind my Astaro. The action failed to setup remote DVR, as expected, but did make 3 port changes. The changes were
    1) UDP traffic on port 63145 is forwarded to the DVR
    2) L2TP opened
    3) TFTP opened

    Mirroring the changes and trying again did not work fully. Now instead of receiving an error on the web page I receive a "this is being setup" msg.

    I also found an article that outlines this config ( Replacing the Actiontec (part 3): WAN-to-LAN keeps Guide and VOD (easier) Verizon Online FiOS FAQ | DSLReports.com, ISP Information ). It suggests unplugging all STBs and bouncing the MoCa when moving them behind your router. Since I did not do this as part of my setup, I am going to give it a try. My hope is that it helps to properly establish VOD transmission.

    I have the Triple Play package, so unfortunately I can't do the ethernet hand-off, but I just put my astaro box on the DMZ of the Actiontec router that they gave me and use packet forwarding for every service that I want to hit my astaro box.  It's a little clunky (every new service that I want delivered needs to be configured in two places), but once I set up all the services I wanted, adding the occasional new one is no sweat at all.  I have the 35/35 service and it's really quite fast. I've seen up to 4+MB/sec come barreling down (depending on the site I'm visiting).


    Care to share the ports and source IPs you used?

     Initially you do not need to redirect any ports. They are only needed for remote DVR so far. All redirects are simple External WAN to  MoCa maps. The ports opened by remote DVR and the LAN Diagram are in my last post.
