Only 10 IP in free version - not enough - Will it be raised?

Hello,

I'm currently "playing" with an Astaro VM as I planned using it.

It appears that the 10 IP/Users limitation is probably going to make me choose another product - unless Astaro would raise it a bit?

Basically, I have a vmware server running on Debian. I host in this my firewall, a reverse proxy, 2 machines in the DMZ (web), an SBS server, a multimedia streaming server, and a NAS.
That's already 7 IP adresses!
Now, I also have 4 PC's, a multimedia networked player, 1 wi-fi windows mobile phone, 1 networked printer, and 2 gaming consoles.
That's another 9 IP adresses!

And I sometimes also need to connect through VPN to the office, wich is the 10th one in the LAN only.

I agree, I'm not a typical end user. But someone installing a dedicated PC for a firewall isn't probably a standard end user - chances are that this person also got a few PC, gaming consoles, etc...

Take in consideration a family with 2 kids - you can easily have 4 PC's in the home, 2 multimedia devices, 2 gaming consoles, 1 wi-fi phone...

Without even talking about a router used as switch for teh wireless access.

So, anybody knows if chances that this limit is raised up is a possibility?

I like Astaro - typically, the SSO would be a great thing for me, allowing to prevent kids going on inappropriate web sites and so on, but if I cannot connect everything behind it, I may have to stick with smoothwall...

    Hmm, with all those toys, it sounds like an opportunity to set up a second box with Astaro and create your own Site-to-Site VPN... [;)]

    I believe I saw here that the next round of beta testing will be offering extended licenses to testers.

    Mierwins, that would eliminate most of the very-small-businesses as customers and prospects.  For many larger businesses, this would allow them to equip smaller offices for $99 forever.

    I have been working on an account for a year where we have an ASG120 in their main office and will be installing ASG110s in 20+ remote offices.  There is no way I would have invested the time I have if I weren't expecting to generate thousands of dollars in income.  Your suggestion would allow the customer to use some old PCs with $99 licenses for their needs, and I would be left with no compensation for my efforts.

    I just can't see Astaro giving up that recurring income to allow a few home users to push the technology envelope... I certainly HOPE they don't, for our sake!

    A different solution is needed.

    Astaro isn't geared towards the home user..and it's their business solution.  If you have to have more than 10 ip's i would look at ipcop, or untangle.  For most of my home clients that stay under 10 i use astaro..for anyone else i use untangle.  For businesses it dpends on the amount of $$$ they are willing to spend on a firewall package..[:)]

    I've got what I consider to be a pretty typical 'geek' set up:

    2 IP printers
    3 desktops
    2 laptops
    1 server
    1 media center
    2 Tivo's
    1 DVR
    1 iPhone
    2 AP's

    This has me way over the 10 IP limit. I've been playing with Untangle to see how workable a solution that would be, and frankly it's a dog compared to ASG. Untangle on Ubuntu takes about as much work to set up as configuring the individual open source tools themselves on a standard distro.

    While Astaro is more mature and easier to configure, I just have too many IP's at home and can't see the number getting any smaller....

    don't have the astaro do dhcp and for the printers and ap's take out the gateway addresses..that'll net you 4 more ip's..[:)]

    first off don't have astaro do dhcp.  Secondly anything that doesn't need the inet i don't put in a gateway(aka like my wireless printers..they really don't need the inet) among other things.  If you REALLY can't live within the 10 ip bounds there's other products up there..


    I have.  I did not list the three wireless access points, the IP camera, or a few other devices for which I assign static addresses and no default gateway so the ASG doesn't count them.

    I know there are other products out there.  But, I like the Astaro.  Lobbying for a change to the 10-IP limitation is another solution, which is what we're doing.

    It's simply not a valid measure of home use.  They need to come up with something different.

    Whatever they come up with doesn't have to be free.  But to solve my problem I have to go to a 120 or 25-User Software and while I might be able to stomach the initial hardware purchase (which would suck after dropping a few hundies into a 1GB C7 with 3 NICs just to run the home version), Gold Maintenance, Web Security, and Email Security subscriptions are simply too expensive for a home router.

    There's a gaping hole in Astaro's licensing between the free home use router and the 120/25-user software offering for those who only need more than 10-IPs.

    It's going to fall on deaf ears...this is a business product and they aren't going to cut into that revenue anymore than they already are especially with the economy heading into a downturn..

    for clients that more than 10 ips i set them up with untangle.

    I could do that, but that is just putting a band-aid on a gaping wound. I forgot I have another access point, printer, and managed switch. Soooo, you get the idea.



    What I would REALLY like to do is get in on one of Astaro's beta's where they hand out the 25 IP licenses....;-) I just can't justify paying for it. I currently am running a CentOS 4-based firewall with Arno's IPTables firewall script, and for firewall only, this has been great for at least four years and is incredibly simple to set up and maintain. The only functionality I've been missing of late is being able to VPN into my home network. Instead of setting up OpenVPN I thought I'd give ASG a whirl. When I ran up against the 10 IP limit I moved on to trying Untangle on Ubuntu. Nice excuse to get some Ubuntu experience, being a Red Hat lifer. Well, been there, done that, and not happy with the results. Currently I'm installing the appliance version of Untangle (from the .iso) instead of putting it on top of Ubuntu v8.04 to see if that's more workable.

    Maybe Santa will get me into an Astaro beta resulting in the licenses I need.

    My home license doesn't cut into their revenue at all.  Their business product is simply too expensive for home use.   They will never get that sale.

    The beta ends then, and then they reward the active testers with an upgraded home license.

    I am with everyone else who has posted here. I really like Astaro, but I need more IPs to simply to run this at home. Everything in this day and age has an IP address, 10 for a home is really no that many. 

    I would even be willing to pay some for the home product with additional IPs, but it just isn't offered. The commercial version is very pricey for a home user. Maybe if everyone started sending nice formal letters to the CEO and or anyone directly under him/her asking for additional home user solutions, we might get something done. It never hurts to ask.

    Astaro selling licences for home users? I don't think that this will happen. 
    If they would start selling it to home users, they would have to deal with all the unexperienced home user requests, resulting in the need of more support technicians to process them. That just won't pay off for Astaro.

    Agreed; this is not really a "home user" product for the masses, though it is useful for us techno-geeks! (I'm including myself in that category!)  The support costs alone would be astronomical if the public, en masse, were buying this, say, at Best Buy, etc...

    The 10 IP limit question for the home version comes up all the time.  In fact, it might be the single most repeatedly asked question on these boards.

    We all like "free".  That's not in question.

    But what's in it for Astaro?

    One would expect that most every business is concerned with protecting their markets, particularly in this economy.  In this case, offering even more free IP's might further jeopardize their and their reseller's small business markets.  There is no revenue upside (to offering more for free), and only potential downside.

    So while there is nothing wrong with asking for more (except that this same question has been previously asked.  A lot.), I have never seen anyone proffer a compelling business reason for Astaro to make this change.

    If that should change, one would expect Astaro to jump right on it.

    Eganders is dead on about this issue; some individuals would and could abuse Astaro's generosity if they let them... I think the 10 user home license is quite generous, and the Beta testing licenses they give out are really generous.  I wouldn't change a thing in this regard.

    Well, the advantage to Astaro is the people implementing this product at home are more likely to recommend Astaro at their work. The majority of the techno-geeks that have implemented this product likely hold techno jobs where they will be in the position to recommend this product to the people that make decisions (usually non-techno geeks).  Without an increase in IPs I will be forced to use another product simply to use on my home network. I agree that the product is good, but why not sell a home version with more IPs. They could market it "as-is" like they currently do with no tech support. You are simply paying for the product to have more IPs because you need them.
