Unable to send email and receive notifications

Hello all,
New user here. I have been hearing about Astaro for a long time from Leo and Steve on the Security Now podcast and finally tried it out. It's an excellent system. I have been using Smoothwall and pfSense for a long time and Astaro is definitely an upgrade.
My problem is I am unable to send email with the Thunderbird email client when I am behind the ASG. I get an error saying it could not contact the smtp server. I do not have an email server, I am simply using gmail with imap. 
As a related note, I have not received any notifications from my ASG. I think if I fix one issue, the other will be resolved also. 
My Astaro is up to date, running version 7.104. How do I resolve this issue? If there is any more info needed, please let me know.

    Hi,
    what packet filter rules do you have in place?

    To get everything rolling you need an internal -> any -> any -> allow

    Then work up to more sophisticated rules as you become more comfortable with the process.

    This allowed me to send emails but I still have not received any updates/notifications from the Astaro.

    Hi,
    do you have a pop3 account as your asg notification or a webmail account? There is a thread from earlier this year where a couple of users had similar problems. I was able to replicate the problem if I remember correctly when I removed my pop3 account from the distribution list.
    For some reason the ASG didn't send e-mails to webmail addresses and genuine pop3 accounts. I am not sure what the resolution was.

    By genuine pop3, I mean that the pop3 client is on your PC.

    You'll need to enable the smtp proxy. There was some discussion that you could enable it, configure it and then disable it, but that never worked for me. You'll need to enable it, configure it and leave it on. Have a look through this thread and post there if you're still stuck.

    I started getting notifications yesterday, they just magically started showing up...
