I want to setup a astaro box purely for the sake of caching.

i use satellite internet for my access and theres daily quotas and so on 

so

would it be possible to use a HOME license and setup astaro for caching?

if so whats the recommended amount of ram?

    Why use Astaro for just this? Seems overkill and I have run into limitations with certain types of documents and requests with the proxy on Astaro.

    IMO, using Squid on any type of Unix box is very easy to setup, unless you are planning on using web filtering or anti-virus or some of the other features Astaro offers.

    Also, I might add if you have no need for the firewall features, etc... that you may want to look at Squid... though you do have to have a bit of Linux knowledge (I'm not a big fan of using the Win32 ported version)...

    Ya you guys are right about squid. 
    At this time i concluded Smoothwall 3 express was perfect for the job with dansguardian however i am going to see how i am going to setup user authentication via vpn .. with astaro it seemed easy.

    Yep, with Astaro it is pretty easy. You can't underestimate the value of your time!

    It would be interesting to compare Astaro's new proxy with Squid to see how good it is at saving bandwidth.
