as a accelerator only

I want to setup a astaro box purely for the sake of caching.

i use satellite internet for my access and theres daily quotas and so on 

so

would it be possible to use a HOME license and setup astaro for caching?

if so whats the recommended amount of ram?

    Should work fine with at least 512MB of RAM.

    There isn't much control over the cache settings, but, I believe, the larger the hard drive, the bigger the cache will be. I'd suggest at least a 40GB.

    As cheap as memory is right now (I can get 1GB DDR2 for about $26.00 or so) I would run 1GB.  Yes, you can use the HTTP Proxy as an accelerator only... the AV can be disabled if you desire (though I would leave it turned on), and the cache size is directly related to the drive size, so the bigger the better.  If performance is what you're after, make sure you use a fast HD (7200 or 10K speeds, SATA2) ... it does make a difference.

    Yes, 10 IPs on your LAN going through the firewall.

    I am in the process of seeking an alternative to help me with my setup.  a basic customer base of users through a Wisp/LAN system. 


    You can not use a Home license for commercial purposes, hence the 10IP limit.

    Why use Astaro for just this? Seems overkill and I have run into limitations with certain types of documents and requests with the proxy on Astaro.

    IMO, using Squid on any type of Unix box is very easy to setup, unless you are planning on using web filtering or anti-virus or some of the other features Astaro offers.

    Also, I might add if you have no need for the firewall features, etc... that you may want to look at Squid... though you do have to have a bit of Linux knowledge (I'm not a big fan of using the Win32 ported version)...
