Poor performance

Hi,

We have a performance issue with our ASG installed on a test computer. I know that Astaro run best on dedicated appliance, but i should work fast enought on a standard PC.
The problem is that when a few users (2-3 are enought) try to access internet at the same times, it become so slow that web site can't be displayed. 
I notice that when swap sapce is not use performance are quite good, but as soon as Astaro use the Swap, it slow down. I did some ping test through the firewall, and they were OK (avg 170 ms for www.google.com), so i set http proxy inactive, but it doesn't change anything.

The HDD is a standard IDE 7200tr/m hard drive. The avg used RAM is 63% of 495 Mb. And CPU is about 1-2%.

Any advise on how to solve the issue?

    Like everyone else has said, RAM could be a huge issue, but check to see if you're running the anti-virus scanner on your web proxy, that will bring Astaro to a stand still like you describe if a number of users are online. You may also want to make sure that if any computers are auto updating software like google, adobe etc that they are in your exceptions list. Not the computers but the destinations. I found that to be my CPU hog, I couldn't get two people browsing at home without having it come to a stand still...

    he's got dual p-4's  every person could be on there at the same time and not overload those puppies..however lack of ram will bring that system to it's knees in a hurry.

    50 users... yeah, I'm with William, put a GB or 2 (RAM's so cheap now it's ridiculous) and forget about it.

    The problem comes up even when a few user are using the ASG.
    I added 256 Mb and stopped anti-vitus on both smtp and pop3 proxy, and stopped IPS also. I will do test like that and hope it will be smooth enought.

    The test was not OK. I was the only one using the ASG and it hangs with 768 Mb Ram. No internet access... and even the WebAdmin was "down", get the timout error a few times...
    If i change my gateway (we are still in test phase and have a ISA server running on another server), no problem to access internet or the WebAdmin.

    Ram usage was at about 30% on the ASG.
    There must be something else...

    I was analysing the daily report, and i notice that most of the source packet dropped are comming from the ASG external NIC...
    I then added 2 PF rules to allow http and https from internal to external, and it worked for a few seconds, then hangs again...

    I analyse the PF logs and there are only "dropped" packet. For example, this is a packet from my pc to Google :

    do you have a masq rule setup?  Are you using the mahcine in bridge mode?  Try at first setting a rule all internal traffic heading outside allow first to see if that works.  What are the full details of how you have the network setup with the asg?

    I come with an update...

    It seems that not all computer have the issue.
    I tried with my laptop, and another laptop at the same time.
    There is absolutely no problem on the second laptop accessing internet or the webadmin
    At the same time, internet is realy slow on my laptop when i have access, and i get the timeout on webadmin.

    Both computers have static ip address with ASG as gateway.
    As already say, i have no problem with the ISA server as gateway...

    what are the machines setup to use as dns?  If they are hardcoded to use the windows mahcine as dns then when you remove the machines from being able to talk to the windows server it won't work.  What you need to do is properly setup the asg and your clients.  If you want to test the asg with your clients then you need to get isa out of the way..point the windows dns server to use the asg as a forwarder and have the asg handle the rest.  Leave the windows mahcine doing dhcp and local dns..the windows mahcine will handle local dns fine and then internet dns it will forward to the asg.  During this trial with the asg on..turn off isa..as it will cause more issues than fix anything.

    There maybe more than one issue, it might not be just networking issues...

    Have you done a simple check of the process tree yet when the ASG was pegged? You should do that, either under Support >> tools or login to the shell and type TOP. This will tell you what is eating up the RAM / CPU if anything is.

    We are having the same problem.
    500 users, Dell 1900 4 GB Ram, 7.101
    Since we installed it half year ago, this issues seems to comes and goes (Mostly coming). 
    We have expected that the new proxy on 7.1 will resolve it but it didn't.
    Right now we are working without the Reporting, without the QOS, without Cache and only with one AV scanning. 
    The CPU stand only on 2%-10% , the RAM - 30%.
    But whenever the load is rise, the surfing speed become impossible, so we are forced to work even without the Http Proxy
    Astaro guys don't seems to find the reason, and we are considering of giving up, and changing to something else.

    to whom at astaro are you talking to?

    We are not aware of any issue with the actual HTTP Proxy.

    Check to be sure that you don't have anthing other than internal networks in the Internal Networks box on the Global IPS settings page.
