Poor performance

Hi,

We have a performance issue with our ASG installed on a test computer. I know that Astaro run best on dedicated appliance, but i should work fast enought on a standard PC.
The problem is that when a few users (2-3 are enought) try to access internet at the same times, it become so slow that web site can't be displayed. 
I notice that when swap sapce is not use performance are quite good, but as soon as Astaro use the Swap, it slow down. I did some ping test through the firewall, and they were OK (avg 170 ms for www.google.com), so i set http proxy inactive, but it doesn't change anything.

The HDD is a standard IDE 7200tr/m hard drive. The avg used RAM is 63% of 495 Mb. And CPU is about 1-2%.

Any advise on how to solve the issue?

    Personally I would not run with the proxy with less than a gig of ram. Ram is so cheap now that there is no reason not to have a gig.

    We don't realy need the proxy, so it isn't a proble to run without, but the problem is still there.

    I've not seen that kind of behavior... I've got an install or 2 that are running on old P4 2.4GHz compact PCs w/ 512MB of ram, with the HTTP Proxy enabled... working fine.  what other features are enabled?  How much bandwidth are you trying to run through the unit?  I might also mention that most of these systems have been upgraded by us to 1GB, but there are a few left with only 512MB (just to cut down on the swap usage)... with DDR2 Ram at only about $30.00 per GB, there's not really a reason not to upgrade.

    if you are using swap(more than say 5-10%) you need more memory.  Astaro runs best with a minimum of 1 gigabyte. You can get away with 768 depending on usage.  What are all of the features you are using in the astaro mahcine?

    Plan was made to upgrade the server, but the NIC is not detected on the new server (Dell T105 with dualcore opteron and 1Gb DRR2) so we stay on this one for now.

    Feature used : SMTP and POP3 proxy for anti-spam with end user portal to manage the quarantaine.
    There is 3 DNAT Rules (OWA, POP3 and sharepoint access) and one masquerading rule (for internet access)
    Intrusion detection and Remote access is also unable.

    We have 5-6 internal (internet access) user and 40 outside user (OWA and sharepoint access)

    that's your issue.  You have nearly 50 users on .5 gigs of ram.  I would advise jumping right to 2 gigabytes of ram.  You have plenty of cpu so that's not an issue..ram is your weak spot.

    Like everyone else has said, RAM could be a huge issue, but check to see if you're running the anti-virus scanner on your web proxy, that will bring Astaro to a stand still like you describe if a number of users are online. You may also want to make sure that if any computers are auto updating software like google, adobe etc that they are in your exceptions list. Not the computers but the destinations. I found that to be my CPU hog, I couldn't get two people browsing at home without having it come to a stand still...

    he's got dual p-4's  every person could be on there at the same time and not overload those puppies..however lack of ram will bring that system to it's knees in a hurry.

    50 users... yeah, I'm with William, put a GB or 2 (RAM's so cheap now it's ridiculous) and forget about it.

    The problem comes up even when a few user are using the ASG.
    I added 256 Mb and stopped anti-vitus on both smtp and pop3 proxy, and stopped IPS also. I will do test like that and hope it will be smooth enought.
