Astaro 120 Crashes After a Day or So, License Related?

Licensing doesn't have anything to do with Crashing...  There are working on stability issues on systems with less system resources (such as your 110/120 appliance), and they should have an up2date out soon that addresses your problem.  YOu do have to have the Maintenance to get up2dates, so that's why they sold you maintenance... in fact, we never ever sell an appliance or software license without it.

I'm glad to hear that you don't think it is the licensing, my only problem with the less system resources thing is this:  If the problem is there is general instability with the 120s then it should have crashed that entire 3 months while it was under the maintenance license, it did not.  In fact it didn't crash at all, and in the four days sense our maintenance has expired its crashed 3 times.

Secondly, could you explain why having less system resources would matter to stability?  We are only using a small amount of our system resources (limited as they may be), why would having a small amount of resources cause a problem, if they are still way more then you need?

I'm just saying that there have been documented problems with resource usage causing the system to appear to crash--in other words, the kernel never panics, everything is still running, but it's running so hard that traffic won't pass through it. Since you have a 120 and maintenance, I'd take this issue up with Astaro support.

No we don't have maintenance, it ran out a few days ago (in the first post).  And we have no intention on buying it (this is a Home owners association we have to go ten rounds to hire someone to pick up trash on the common grounds).  I'm not convinced based on what you've said that there isn't some sort of automatic cause-problems-until-they-buy-maintenance program.  The timing is just too suspect.  Additionally the resources thing doesn't make sense if we aren't max-ing out the box.  And if you look at the CPU charts right before each of the crashes it is never high, its always around 7 to 25%.   If there is another reason why it might be crashing I want to know about it so I can try to fix it, otherwise I'm going to kick the thing to the curb and drop in a cisco (which yes, I'll have to donate personally).

As Bruce says, Astaro knows that they have some stability issues with the ASG 120 running on v7. Astaro is working on fixing these issues but it isn't yet known when those fixes will be ready to release.

There is no "automatic crash the machine if the maintenance expires" code in the Astaro... it is simply as we have stated, there are some issues that Version 7 has on those small appliances that are simply not fixed yet.

What vendor in a sane state of mind would use code like this on the products? Even if you might be able to sell a couple more maintenance options with it, the general opinion of the product would suffer. Besides, think about what happens if such a thing would leak, or found by reverse engineering or whatever. I don't think any number of maintenance subscriptions would be able to compensate for the resulting loss of reputation.

Maybe Astaro should have just stated that 120's must stick with V6 and V7 would not be an option.  Cisco does that sort of thing all the time as an older or less capable product gets left in the dust.

In our case 7 was already out when we bought the 120 so its not like we upgraded it (we purchases about 3.5 months ago).  But we wouldn't have been any less inclined to buy it with 6, all we need is a good firewall and some QoS. But anyhow, thanks for the input.  I'm not positive there isn't something else going on beyond just some problems with 7.  To believe that requires me to believe that there was a series of about 8 coincidences.  And I don't believe in coincidences.  

But it doesn't really matter because the alternative that Bruce and Drees are offering is that (I'm interpreting a little here) that Astaro put 7.0 on the 120s and sold them knowing that they had stability issues.  Or they didn't bother to test the software on the 120.  Instead of saying this is a beta product, they told me it was as stable as a Cisco or a Lok.  So that either makes them liars or really incompetent.

What I was hoping to hear from people (I really wanted to believe in Astaro, I want an alternative to the expensive Ciscos and Loks I use for work - and thinking the worst of people is a little unhealthy) was that yah, there is some obscure checkbox somewhere that when in combination with this other checkbox and  without a maintenance plan the thing crashes; there isn't malicious intent it's just a bug.  I understand having bugs, I'm a software developer myself, but obviously you can't miss the bug when the device just "generally" crashes.

Anyhow, I've given up, I'm ordering a Cisco, it might cost me some money, but I won't have to think about it again.

I agree, right now the product is good but it's just not stable.  The ASA5505 is a good alternative to the ASG120.

I agree, right now the product is good but it's just not stable.  The ASA5505 is a good alternative to the ASG120.
