Home Licence Discussion

Hello Folks,

i dont understand the discussion about the "Home Licence".

First: its free!!!!
second: you have now Anti Virus, Anti Spam und more Protection!!!!
third: 10 IPs at home, for Free, shoud be enough, dont you think.

after all: it is a "HOME USER Licence", if you need more => buy yourself one, no Problem.

Protection is more importent, then unlimited Filesharing.

That what i think.

    So true! And show me a little home router you can get for free that comes with Antivirus, Antispam, Phishing protection, and URL Filtering!

    I see some post talk of "professional" home users .. with maybe thousands of euros of hardware .. you don't get a "free" home user Plasma TV, or free home TiVo , or free HOME Use ISP, so maybe just pay for a ASG software / hardware deal and have unlimited licence technology (no to mention support) or accept that the ASG V7 is developed by a commercial company, there are of course open source solutions for free, but hey it's the Astaro web admin that makes it all tick !

    I totally agree that security is more important then file sharing. Also you don`t get that much features for home user`s. But where can I get this licence ? All I get is v6 that has no web filtering! http://www.astaro.org/images/smilies/confused.gif

    There is no point to give a free license of such and advance firewall and limit connections, its stupid.
    No to mention that Home Lic for V6 supports 32000 conns. so why V7 does not?
    Home users with Astaro are security people or network admins, i don't know any normal user ho implement this platform at home, so its correct to say that this is a Proffesional platform even with the Home Lic.

    Yes that is a VERY valid point ... as an Astaro reseller, we certainly get a percentage of business clients who use ASG/ASL systems in a "private" capacity.
    We are talking to Astaro directly to discuss this more ... the good thing I suppose is that at we can have this debate at all so Astaro should be supported for this at least. I hope a good solution can be found, Gert, Markus, Jan and all at Karlsruhe have given us a lot, let us hope we all work together and keep Astaro ASL where it belongs .. at the top. We all need this, open source, commercial, and home / power users.

    I mostly use my ASL at home for testing stuff I wouldn't dare try in a live production environment.

    Also, to easily VPN to work, (permanent IPSEC VPN nailed up).

    Maybe 10IP is low for home now... But to be honest, I've seen more equipment in a lot of homes now days than a small business office. (Like 5-10) staff.

    The problem Astaro probably have, is that if they offered say a 20IP Home License, many small businesses would just grab and use that for free.

    [;)] Correct on that one. BUT it won't apply to people who don't contribute I do not believe. It isn't for people who come to complain, or have posted like 10 times in a couple years.

    You mean like me... I have been using Astaro since V2 but am not a Linux expert and find it 100% reliable - so I just ignore it - just check occaisonally for updates. I love the features and oay for the AV and anti-spam functionality.

    However - it won't work for me with the new rules so I shall have to look elsewhere. Can anyone suggest a FW that can have two external interfaces with policy based routing, SMTP Proxy with AV & Antispam (like Astaro) even if I have to pay for them (within reason)......
