v7 License issues.

Any news on this?

This may impact our use of Astaro corporate wide.

None of our ASL systems had Surf Protection.  So, to maintain the SAME functionality I had with v6 in v7 I have to spend money for a Web Security subscription for each license we have.

100IP Head Office - Add $3250.50 AUS
25IP License in Russia - Add $1240 AUS
10IP License in Brisbane - Add $620 AUS
10IP License in South Africa - Add $620 AUS

Total: $5730.50 just to maintain functionality we have now with v6.

We are paying maintenance, we should be able to upgrade to v7 without cost.

This is also kind of illegal under Australian law under 'bait and switch' type legislation.
(Whereby an item is sold at $X then terms are changed to charge more for same thing).

From Astaro US Support:

"Hi Simon,
For version 7 they have changed the licensing where it will be required to purchase SecureWeb in order to use the http proxy, if there is no subscription for a feature it will be disabled. Your maintenance does entitle you to updates; however I can not change your license to enable the http proxy for version 7, unless you pay for SecureWeb."

So... in one breath they say I'm entitled to updates, then in the next that I can't have it unless I pay extra for SecureWeb.

Not happy Jan... Saga continues.

So in short, no HTTP proxy without the secure web subscription?

I had an expired ver 6 home power user license which I could not upgrade so I had to log into my astaro with a new user ID and get a new account and get a version 7 license. Secure Web was included. Maybe that is what you need to do?

i have the new version 7 and i tried the fix and it still doesn't work for me. Sometimes it does sometimes it doesn't. Just did a fresh install and nothing. No stats on any pages whatsoever.

Each ASG comes with a list of basic features like routing, vpn, packet filter, etc. for which we already pay a fixed price when we buy the licence or the appliance. Then we pay a yearly up2date fee in order to get support and upgrades to these basic features. I can understand that we must pay yearly fees for services like antivirus and spam protection, because Astaro provides us with signature updates. But if we use http proxy without antivirus, I don't understand why we should now pay an extra yearly licence ! 

I will have great difficulties to explain this to our customers...

just as a small reminder.

The home use license was always limited to max. 10 IP's behind the firewall. So there is no change in that.

We even extended the home use licenseand give you guys Web- and Email Filtering as well es Email-Encryption completly free, inluding instant pattern updates.

This means free Anti-Virus, free Anti-Spam, free URL-Filter, ... etc.

The 10 means ten devices behind the firewall communicating with or through the asg device. We only count the last seven days.

That's for the home use license mech9122.  Not commercial licenses.

Well, I am looking at purchasing SafeSquid to replace web proxy functionality under Astaro.

It appears to do everything that Astaro does HTTP cache wise and is VERY cheap compared with Astaro Secure Web.

For my 100IP Astaro license, SecureWeb = $2995 PER ANNUM
For SafeSquid Plus - it's $300 ONCE

Well yes that is home use license. Who has ever heard of paying extra for
squid proxy. I copied and pasted wrong info. Why would you license proxy
only seperate? Simon I guess there license structure is what led you to go
else where for this functionality.

Of course, you do have to setup an additional machine to run SafeSquid.

The Squid Proxy is licensed under the GPL, so in theory you should be entitled to the source code to the commercial versions. I wonder if they are violating the GPL there?

The price is right if the user interface they have built is any good, though.

Yeah, commercial license, HTTP proxy was free, now you have to pay extra for it.

Will play around with SafeSquid today I hope.

If all you're looking for is basic squid proxy functionality, you can install squid very easily. Most distrobutions include it so it's a simple matter of installing the package. It's also easy to install from source from http://www.squid-cache.org/.

I still can't believe that Astaro has taken basic web proxy functionality out of v7. [:S]

Did they not do any market research before blindly turning features off?
