New home user licensing more limited on V7..

And still no power users license... its been a good last 4 years, but now I must bow out...

Well, I read the release notes, and it looks like 10 user/10 ip addresses, with 1000 concurrent connections... however, it looks like they can shut down connections when it goes above %110 of usage on the 1000 user license now, and I am wondering if this will also happen with the 10 user license....

"Home-Use Licenses 
We will continue offering a Home-Use package. The new V7 package will be free of charge and will now include the base license, all subscriptions and Astaro Up2Date. But it will be limited to 10 IPs/10 Users, and 1000 concurrent connections.  
Note: Astaro will provide no support to home users and they need to agree to participate in Astaro’s Threat Research Network."

and this from the 1000 user section...

Within ASG software the limits for maximum IPs / users are now enforced in the following 
way: 
• The administrator will get an email notification if the IP limit is reached. 
• At that time new IPs / users will still be accepted up to a maximum of 110% 
of the licensed number of IPs (grace limit) 
• If the grace limit is reached no more IPs / users will be accepted

    Do I understand home use correctly for v7.
    Per Gert:
    We even extended the home use licenseand give you guys Web- and Email Filtering as well es Email-Encryption completly free, inluding instant pattern updates.

    This means free Anti-Virus, free Anti-Spam, free URL-Filter, ... etc.

    And only 1000 concurrent connections where v6 is 32,000, lost on this?
    I am okay with 10 ip's, but connections?
    Maybe I am just misunderstanding this.

    Well, since Firefox and this Astaro BB don't seem to work well with "quoting" someone else, I will just say this...

    Thanks for the heads up on PFSENSE!  I have already replaced Astaro on my home network with it.  Its doing everything as well as I had, and no limitations.

    With all the bloat of Astaro after 4 years of use, it seems I became "jaded" to any other options, and with PFsense working as well as it has today, I can see that the $120 I pay Astaro every year can be spent elsewhere and I can find other alternatives...

    Astaro lost one advocate here this week.

    1 more Q: how many home user working in IT? Can normal home user run astaro? No, they buy zone alarm,... 

    Many "home" user working in IT and recomend security software,... have contract with other company ,... now, in home what do i do with astaro? Playing, testing? Yes.

    BTW: i don t know how can i replace in 27 company security by night. But i am now looking for new security aplication.

    Free for home use at 10 IP's with the security services enabled is FANTASTIC, try and find someone else who offers this....you wont, not for freee.


    Actually, there are other solutions that do offer this functionality for free, like ipcop with some addon modules of endian firewall http://www.efw.it which is a fork of ipcop that includes most of these options all rolled up into an extremely simple package.

    for a home user endian is great
    no ip/connection restriction
    up to 4 interfaces
    http, pop, smtp proxy
    url/content filter, spam filter, grey/blacklisting rbl's
    antivirus, free updates
    and ips via snort with automatic updates

    the only reason i'm looking at astaro is to evaluate it for business use as it provides a lot of flexibility for the needs of my company and for my customers.
    endian/ipcop are extremely easy to set up, yes you lose flexibility in comparison with astaro but how many subnets do you need? you get red (untrusted), green (trusted), blue (wireless or secondary subnet, semi-trusted), and orange (dmz).
    i have also noticed that the spam filtering seems to work 10x faster than on astaro, which really annoys me when sometimes emails take 10 min to come through my astaro test box.

    anyways, if you really want a linux firewall and don't want to pay, then there are options available to you.

    Well, the point is that Astaro and all the other "open source" products run on Linux - if you are a Linux "Guru" ( like the Astaro team) you can go and build your own, in your own time then it is free, you do your own support, and you get EXACTLY what you want. The rest of us who can not do this get ready made systems, Windows is not great, but Gates and Co were clever guys they did what we couldn't. We paid for it ! So if you can write your own Firewall UTM software and release it to the Open Source community then good luck and respect to you. If you can not, then you take what you are given.
    Astaro is a fantastic product and I still do not see where else a commercial company gives so much to a "domestic user" for free.

    did you renew your License? or is it a "new" one?

    I can live with that 10 IP Adress limit... but... i don´t like the 1000 Connections limit... and i DON´T like the "no SpamProtection"...

    Spam protection falls under Email Security, not on it's own. That section is there to support the older license scheme, the same as the IPSEC Connection limit, that is from the days when home license supported 10 tunnels.

    ...and simby... the "Home Power User" License was "awarded" to "very active" Forum Members...

    My License is a normal "Home User"... it is just an old v5 (not v6 as i mentioned earlier) Lic.

    Wow. Well maybe a few drawbacks to some. But for FREE this includes some nice features bundled into one app. And all features are FREE. Yes there are
    many free linux distros out there, but Astaro gives an all in one solution to
    where others are usually supplied via an add-on module set-up.

    First off, I think V7 looks great, and I love what it does. My problem is, it does a bit too much.  It supposedly only counts IP's going thru, but I am out, and it is all my servers, with no auto updates, or any other reason to access the internet, who have used up ALL of my 10 slots, plus the one free one.

    This posting has some good info, and I am actively looking for a replacement for Astaro.  I hate to do this, but I have no choice, not if I want to maintain peace in the family.

    FYI, I am an IT Consultant, but I do not run any business from home. I do a lot of testing, evaluating, and build a lot of things to learn how they work, and the 10 IP license just does not cut it.

    I do have one question for the folks from Astaro.  I am curious as to how the licensing you use fits into the GPL?

    V7 has changed the way IPs are counted, it appears to count anything that it has an address for, excluding the interfaces (changed under v7.001)

    If you don't have a need for the devices to go through or talk to the firewall give them fixed addresses. I know this is not always a good solution or put your toys behind a nat routed box so only the one IP address is counted. The only catch is the reduced concurrent connection count, but if the boxes aren't talking to the firewall that won't be an issue either.

    Don't get me wrong, I think the new way of counting IP addresses is not fair or good, but it is Astaro's bat and ball.

    I preferred the previous licences where I paid for the security features I needed.

    RFCat_vk, agree with statements above.

    It is a pain though this new licensing.  We have many devices that do not need any external access.
    (Like the four Wireless Access Points scattered around our office, each of these have a IP.  Dumb print servers, dialin server devices etc etc.)

    It should be like the old way, IP's *traversing* the firewall.

    However, it is Astaro's decision.

    This and the new HTTP proxy licensing issue are making me re-evaluate my use of Astaro in our organisation however.
