Want to try out Astaro

Hello,

I tried Astaro about a couple month ago and gave up after trying to get it to work. I think what the problem was I need to register my network cards MAC address with my internet provider and I couldn't figure out how to get out the web to do that after I setup Astaro. So I have heard good things and wondering how to get it setup and wondering if you guys could help me out. Give me some pointers on what I need to do to set this up.

    If you havn't already, check out the manual at  ftp://ftp.astaro.com/pub/ASL/documentation/manual/v6.0 

    If your ISP requires you to register your MAC address before they will assign an IP address, you may have to do that off-line (via phone), or using a computer with an already registered NIC before attempting to use Astaro. Who is your ISP?

    My ISP provider is Mediacom.

    EDIT: If i remember right someone told me I might have to use NAT. I do not know what that means.

    I have a SmoothWall Express Firewall to my ISP - Scarlet - and wish to move to ASG V6 Beta as a "Home user".

    My ISP locks my IP-address to the MAC-address on my side of the RFC-nnn Bridge.

    If I swap to another card, I automatically have to request re-assignment of an IP_address  

    Can I not Put in the require MAC-address in the ASG machine and just play. As far as the outside world - including my ISP - is concerned this is just "1 machine" with "1 ethernet adapter/IP-address". Please note, my ISP does know that this is a multi-machine end-point - 'cos I told them so, before setting-up the account.

    Also note: This is not a request to circumvent licensing agreements such as those made by Casema and others. It is only meant to get over the test-phase. After testing, either the "correct" card will be moved or a new address requested just once.

    The huge problem with continually changing IP-address is the maintainance involved in resetting all the underlying software on all the machines such as DNS, e-mail, etc.

    Wow I am new at this too.  I just figured out how to use NAT & MASQ.  So I think this might help you.  I use Comcast and only have one IP address so I have to MASQ the Internal Network to look like the External one.  Then I had to add a DNAT/SNAT to use the MASQ in order to reach the Internet.  Then under rule I added TCP_UDP_ALL and I was off to the internet.  From there just keep trying.

    concerning changing MAC addresses... most cards allow you to run a MFG provided utility to change the MAC address in the unlikely event of a conflict (have only had this happen twice in my career, rare, but possible).

    Thank you for your incredibly quick response. I simply do not understand how this could possibly help switch adapter cards AND retain the same MAC-address - That is what this "request for a new feature" - this section - is all about.

    I do take your reply onboard and it will help with regard to my other entry under "Beta releases" down at the bottom of the main index.
