If your ISP requires you to register your MAC address before they will assign an IP address, you may have to do that off-line (via phone), or using a computer with an already registered NIC before attempting to use Astaro. Who is your ISP?

I have a SmoothWall Express Firewall to my ISP - Scarlet - and wish to move to ASG V6 Beta as a "Home user".

My ISP locks my IP-address to the MAC-address on my side of the RFC-nnn Bridge.

If I swap to another card, I automatically have to request re-assignment of an IP_address  

Can I not Put in the require MAC-address in the ASG machine and just play. As far as the outside world - including my ISP - is concerned this is just "1 machine" with "1 ethernet adapter/IP-address". Please note, my ISP does know that this is a multi-machine end-point - 'cos I told them so, before setting-up the account.

Also note: This is not a request to circumvent licensing agreements such as those made by Casema and others. It is only meant to get over the test-phase. After testing, either the "correct" card will be moved or a new address requested just once.

The huge problem with continually changing IP-address is the maintainance involved in resetting all the underlying software on all the machines such as DNS, e-mail, etc.

Wow I am new at this too.  I just figured out how to use NAT & MASQ.  So I think this might help you.  I use Comcast and only have one IP address so I have to MASQ the Internal Network to look like the External one.  Then I had to add a DNAT/SNAT to use the MASQ in order to reach the Internet.  Then under rule I added TCP_UDP_ALL and I was off to the internet.  From there just keep trying.

concerning changing MAC addresses... most cards allow you to run a MFG provided utility to change the MAC address in the unlikely event of a conflict (have only had this happen twice in my career, rare, but possible).

Thank you for your incredibly quick response. I simply do not understand how this could possibly help switch adapter cards AND retain the same MAC-address - That is what this "request for a new feature" - this section - is all about.

I do take your reply onboard and it will help with regard to my other entry under "Beta releases" down at the bottom of the main index.

I do know that you can do that and I expect we are in a minority.

This section, as I understand it, is essentially a "request for new functionality" forum. That is precisely what I was attempting to do and I cannot for the life of me countenance changing the Manufacturer's ID - The first part of the MAC - by burning it into the PROM. For one thing the (auto-) install process of SuSE Linux Enterprise Server version 9 (equivalent to SuSE Professional v9.1) upon which ASG v6.1 Beta is based - is going to get more than "SLIGHTLY confused" by a Gigabyte Fibre-Optic channel ethernet adapter re-acting like a half duplex 10 MB ancient RealTek 8109 look-alike from the back-streets of Hong-Kong. That is your suggestion!

The problem that I describe has two parts, namely:

1   I wish to switch from Smoothwall Express V2 patch 8 on a
     Pentium  Pro to an ASG on a Celeron (having recently acquired
     said Celereon). As part of the process, I wish to TEST out the ASG
     BEFORE  committing.

2   My ISP LOCKS the provided public IP-address to the MAC of the 
     first ethernet adapter after the RFC Bridge in their/mine modem.

The second point is what I am addressing here, the first point is how I got to the second one (justification).

The problem is: If I keep SWITCH-ing FireWall Machines - ie the ethernet adapter - then I automatically have to get a NEW IP-address. Given my "Home working environment", I do not have the option of pulling the card and putting it in the other machine - The obvious Industrial choice, although, if your maintaining a machine in New York from Basingstoke - a job that I was chasing - it might prove just a teensy weensy bit impractical - After all, Concord does not fly any more ...

I can with much ado about nothing handle doing that once - doing it very many times will probably bring out the first requirement for being a Systems Programmer - born mad!

Why? ===> Although FireWalls are great and wonderfull things, they do not do everything. If you should, as I do, run a DNS server, then the replies that that server provides contain its very own IP-address whatever it is. This is also true for Exim e-mail (SMTP) server (à là ASG), etc, etc for almost any server you can think of.

The joy of having a single, rented, public IP-address requires the user (administrator) to handle the TCP/UDP reply contents (the "my IP-address is" ...) appropriately ==> ie, you have to go over everything that you have ever installed and change the Bind v9 VIEW or whatever to display the correct single PUBLIC IP-address. It is a gross contravention of "nettiqette" to go telling the world you are using a (subnet of) PRIVATE CLASS A, B and/or C IP=-address(es).

As an aside to the "real discussion point", I do wish to look at the EZIPUPDATE package with a view to making it work the other way round - not tell some Dynimac-IP DNS service provider that your IP address just got changed, but telling your very own DNS, etc systems the same. If and when I get everything sitting nice and comfy in something like a real D/B system, this would be an extremely usefull tool to kick-off an internal "mass update" to keep everything nicely aligned and all that. Who knows, I may even prove the dreaded saying to be entirely and inutterably groundless - then I always was the exception and all that.
