ASL Bottleneck

Apparently, ASL is my main internet bottleneck.  We recently upgraded to a 5Mbps downspeed internet connection, yet ASL only has a troughput of ~1Mbps.  And yes, I do get full speed on the outside of the router.

The hardware is old.  PII 233Mhz with 128MB or RAM, and (2) 10Mbit NICs.  What should be my first step in upgrading for the purpose of increasing throughput?

Any help would be appreciated.

    throw out the machine and get a new one with at least 512 megs of ram and a 20 gig hard disk.  How many users and what version of Astaro?

    About 20 machines access through this router and ASL v5.1

    If you use Virus Protection for Web and / or Mail try to use a fast CPU... The best recommendation for your Hardware is to use HCL:

    Get an sc420 from dell(celey 2.54 ghz) and add a gig of ram and a 40 gig drive.  Throw in another nic and you've got room to grow.

    If you want to build one yourself at least 1 ghz and 512 megs of ram and at least a 10 gig drive.  My current setup(with my tweaks) would handle your load just fine.

    If your nics are only 10mbps, you need to make sure they, and all your other 10mbps hardware, are running in full duplex.

    Just my 2 cents worth.

    The 2.8 or 3.0 Ghz P-IV systems are going pretty cheap and 512MB of RAM seems to do the trick. Even a low end system has a 40GB drive which is enough.

    I like what IBM puts out and on the low side I've used an A50 tower at a remote site (you'll need an extra NIC). In a rack I really like the x306 which has 2 NICs onboard. My x306 is hooked to a 1.5Mbps  T1 and my speed tests always run pretty close to that (1.4Mbps +)

    Low speed and than and oldie of PC. If you want speed - invest in hardware - take a server not a pc.

    We have an ASG220 with Contentfilter and virusfilter for http, the same mashine has to handle our e-mails. At least we have 300 Workstations use this astaro - it works.

    Well, Linux is notorious for running well on low-end hardware.  The latency is great, but the throughput just sucks.  I guess ASL just has a lot of overhead.  Even though it's only functions are Firewall , routing, and VPN.

    And by the way, this machine is a server.  Just old.

    Did you check the knowledge base for the HCL?

    Even if you don't want to upgrade the processor at least give it more memory, like 512mb otherwise it is going to spend considerable time swapping. The is a tweak to free up a considerable amount of ram by shifting the cache to harddrive.

    While linux is good at running on low end machines, I think yours is just a bit too low end, especailly with a 5mbs pipe into it.

    Astaro is more than a damn Firewall!    It is a complete unified threat management system. You want a regular firewall to run on an old crappy machine then run IPCOP, or Smoothwall. Astaro is ten times what IPCOP is so don't even go there!
