Additional licenses for home

I thought this was the case, and ,unfortunately, it seems as if I'm right.  For those of you with multiple addresses from your ISP, you could always just get some linksys/dlink/netgear router and have your appliances (tivo, xbox, etc) use those as the gateway and save the surf/AV protection for your actual computer systems.  It's an option that I may go, but it's another $70-100 I would rather spend on more Astaro licenses...

It is also possible to connect a cheap NAT router to the Internal network originating from your ASL box via its WAN connection. The cheap NAT router will then give you an additional subnet in the home that you can stick a bunch of machines on, while just consuming one Astaro IP license.

My JetDirect print server gets counted by ASL, even though it NEVER talks to the internet.

Also, my notebooks get counted 2x if I sometimes use wireless, and sometimes CAT5.

Set your jet direct statically..then it won't have to touch the ASL box for a poiont against your license.  I know it probably should not be counted but that is a workaround.

can u explain us how to read the alicd.dump file ?
for example what does the port number mean ? is this the last traffic or the most traffic that the host had and what does the P=X mean ?

I hesitate to describe that file in detail, because it's an unpublished interface which could change at any time. Nevertheless it can serve us for debugging purposes.

The comment line describes the reason why the IP address has been initially inserted into the database (there should exist a corresponding line in the /var/log/license.log of that day).

"P" is the number of the Internet Protocol (/etc/protocols,  e.g. 6=TCP, 17=UDP).

having never operated a DHCP server on an ASL myself, in the meantime I asked colleages about that issue, and they tell that it should be possible to dedicate only a few IP addresses to the DHCP service - thus leaving the remaining licensed IPs to non-DHCP nodes. 
The ASL DHCP server tries to reassign the same IP address.

So - in which way does usage of the ASL DHCP interfere with IP licensing?


The third issue you mentioned (computers with more than one interface address) is indeed a problem of every host-oriented license scheme (as we all don't want processors with factory supplied on-chip private keys). 
But I don't believe that this LAN/WLAN case is statistically very relevant here...

My point was that using ASL for DHCP means that things like my JetDirect get counted as a licensed connection.

I understand I could statically allocatate the JetDirect's IP if I need to.

I've done something similar to what VelvetFog's talking about. My DSL modem is also a 4port switch and does NAT. I use this for all the machines, devices, etc.., that I don't need to filter. Everything else I put behind the firewall. I have about 16-20 devices total...[:)]

All 14 of my devices on my network are Static IP and Astaro sees all of them... even my Laser printer and file server which never access the internet. Astaro yells at me every day that I have exceeded the Lic.

[/ QUOTE ]I have both a HP LaserJet 5si with JetDirect, and an Apple LaserWriter 630 pro. Neither of them gets counted by my ASL v4. No reason that they should, since they don't talk to the ASL gateway.
