20 IP addresses would be a better minimum license number, in my view.

Your UPS, switch, laserjet and accesspoint shouldn't be trying to use the internet!

The license is based on the number of devices making connections through the firewall.

As Martin says, the Astaro license is for number of devices protected by the firewall.  Not just those connecting to the internet.

Counting the Number of protected IPs is standard on Firewall Licensing. Its the same with Borderware and Checkpoint.

Welp I guess I am SOL...That doesn't even cover the number of Cisco devices I have on my home network, let alone the workstations and "servers". All in all I have about 50 IP's in use right now. 

hehe... quite a nice home network... may we should ask them to offer a super power user license?

Because if users is in fact IPs as everyone states than 10 is way too small with todays networks.  As already pointed out you easily can get 10 ips with very little work.  HTPCs, wifi enabled Palm devices, Laptops, APs, etc.

in ASL'S eyes if it has an ip address and touches the firewall it counts against hte 10 ip license.  nothing about users..it counts connections and ips whichever occurs first.

You should not forget that we talk about the FREE license of a professional product. In my opinion this license model is fair. If you really have a home network in size of a small company (not to many ppl have this) you can either think about buying the corporate license or if you talk with them, they may give you a non commercial license like the one for schools.

But they say USERS not IPs.  If it is IPs then why not say exactly that?

As for ref's comment about size.  Remember 10 ips != 10 computers.   Like I said and others have, you have to count laptops, palm devices, printers,HTPC, game consoles, etc.

Lets say you have the following:
1 - Desktop
1 - Laptop
1 - Network Printer
1 - Palm
1 - Xbox (its only $149 now many people may have 2 for kids)
1 - Slimserver (music client device, which again many people may have multiples of these)
1 - Access Point (It has its own IP)

That is already 7 devices, and really is not that big of a network.  I can see many people have more than 1 desktop for kids, I can see many people have more than one console, or more than one printer even (Laser for econmomy, Ink Jet for color).  That will quickly add up to more than 10.

I'm with yyou tank.  I am by no means a networking guru or power user but in my humble home network I have:

1 PC
1 XBox
1 VoIP phone
1 Server
1 Router/Bridge for LAN side
1 WiFi AP/Router/Bridge for DMZ
1 WiFi Bridge for Xbox

That's seven without really even trying.  Add to that work laptop, printer, PC for my daughter, TIVO, etc...  Everything now has an IP address...

Reading the  New Home User and Power User Policies for ASL  post in the Announcements forum it does say:

So it seems (or at least the statement makes it seem) that it's a 10 user agreement, not 10 IP agreement...

Sure I am joking now, but really within a just a few years that will be fairly normal to have.

IP-based webcams are becoming common in homes for security, and those would become another protected IP. (unless you are into that sort of thing [;)])

don't forget the tea cosy...  I believe 10 is fine for now,as u say in a few years, especially with the introduction of ipv6 Astaro may need to up the limit..  We will all need our fridges to order the shopping, not to mention the internet aware robotic cleaners.  [:)]
