Home user LIcense

I was just wondering...

I read about the "new home license" :

Now, the Astaro Security Linux V5 home user license does not place any restrictions on NICs or SMTP domains.
The only limitations are 10 users and 2,000 concurrent connections, which should be sufficient for home use.

Therefore, there is no longer a technical need for a special Power Home User license.

Is it just me or doesn't 10 ips seem little ?

I have a very little network at home and I use 8 IPs.. as minimum. And wehen I have a friend or two over for coffee, and they bring a laptop or two .. I run out of IPs..

Since everything today uses a IP eg. my phones 1 IP for each phone, (SIP and 323 phones) My workstation, My gf workstation, my laptop, and a little server....

This is the scenario, or am I what to be called a poweruser ?

The way I read that is 10 USERS, not IPs. I understand that to be 10 user accounts on the astaro server for use in HTTP auth, and VPN auth.

I could be wrong but that is how I read that statement.

ASL v5 keeps track of ips..jsut have to drill through the reports..[:)]

astaro defines "users" to "ip who connect to internet". you can have 100 ip´s in you lan, but only 10ip´s are allowed to access the internet over the asl. possible are more, but than you broke the license.

[/ QUOTE ]...in addition to the above, I also have a networked LaserJet, a Wi-Fi access point, a 3Com SuperStack II managed Ethernet switch with its own IP address, and an APC SmartUPS with an Ethernet interface. It doesn't take long to use up 10 IP addresses. I can do it without even turning on my main PC.

20 IP addresses would be a better minimum license number, in my view.

Your UPS, switch, laserjet and accesspoint shouldn't be trying to use the internet!

The license is based on the number of devices making connections through the firewall.

[/ QUOTE ] The UPS and the LaserJet don't, but the switch sends out a multicast beacon (to addr 224.0.0.1) every minute, so it gets noticed by ASL. The Wi-Fi accesspoint runs the PPTP tunnels from my Wi-Fi enabled laptops to the ASL box, so it too, gets sensed by ASL.

As Martin says, the Astaro license is for number of devices protected by the firewall. Not just those connecting to the internet.

Counting the Number of protected IPs is standard on Firewall Licensing. Its the same with Borderware and Checkpoint.
