astaro on low end box

I would like to run astaro version 5 on a p2 233 with 96 to 128 megs of ram. I would like to use smtp proxy along with http caching. Also I'm interested in the snort feature and the l2tp vpn option. This box will service our home network we basically have about 4 servers and our 2 workstations. Will this be enough horse power for 2 people. Also we will be using a 10 gig hard drive.

    I've ran Astaro V4 on a 100MHz Pentium with 96megs of RAM with no problems.  The trick was to put the network cards and hard drive to another, better machine and after installation move them to the pentium.  Memory was a bit tight but after disabling all unnecessary services it ran fine for months.  This was at my home with four machines behind the firewall and only a 512kbit internet connection so performance wasn't a big issue.

    I installed smoothwall today I really did not like the install process it was no where close to astaro. I plain on getting a better hard drive at least a 20 to 40 7200 rpm. Right now I'll have to run on 96 megs of ram the system I'm using runs pc 66 and its hard to find that stuff. I was lucky to find the 96 megs I have. I also upgraded our dsl line it should be installed by Saturday night my new speeds will range from Up to 3Mbps downstream X 384Kbps upstream. Do you think this box can handle that. I mainly will be using vpn for our wireless lan her at home. So the box will have no more than 2 vpn users connected at one time do you guys see that as a problem. I also will be running my exchange server and web server also maybe nfuse for citrix behind it.

    PC100 ram can be used, as it will drop down to 66. You just can not use PC133 since it can only go down one step to 100.

    Whatever you run behind it shouldn't have much effect on your horsepower, since you will probably be DNAT'ting the ports right?

    Yes I will be using nat in the dmz zone. The system is an old gateway I contacted there support and got ram spec. The specs are the ram should run at 4 clock cycles. Also it should be 16x64. I have not seen any pc 100 that has 16 chip total. I tried a pc 100 stick and it did not work.  My manin concern os will I have a problem running web admin will it be slow. Also will I have a problem with 2 vpn connection and with the http cache. If those things run ok I'll start the install Saturday afternoon.

    which gateway is it? I have old compaqs i am using here that run pc-100.  You avhe to use single sided low density ram for those older machines which is in short supply.

    William it is a gateway e-3100. I'm hoping this 96 megs will be enough. I hopefully will go to a used parts computer sale and will pick up a box for astaro.

    Guys I was able to find an old 20 gig ata 66 quantin hard drive. So I replaced the 4 gig orginal drive with that. I'm going to have to stick with 96 megs of ram until I can find some more. Hopefully I'll be able to get 32 megs more by the end of the week form a system that we are going to throw away. I've installed astaro 5 on the box if I have any speed problems I plain on installing version 4.

    It's not identical to the box you're hoping to use. . .both more and less, but I'm running ASL4 on a P-II 300MHz, 128MB RAM, and only 2GB HDD.  This machine is serving as one end of a VPN tunnel (other end is ASL4 on a Celeron 500/128MB/20GB), and also does standard packet filter & POP3 proxy.

    I haven't tried ASL5 on either box yet 'cause I'm waiting to see a few things stabilize first, so I can't guess how it'll perform.

    Anyway, I'm guessing that if anything cramps your style it's going to be the RAM, not the CPU, and most certainly not the HDD.

    with ASL 4 i had a Celeron 366 Mini-PC with 128MB PC-100 and a 4.3 GB HD...Mini-PC.
    I got that 2 years ago from an ebay auction for 99Euros.  [:)]
    For V5 use i upgraded a bit (256MB and 10GB HD) but its still the same PC...it looks that it works with that for homeuse.

    ASL5 will not allow itself to be installed on aanything smaller than 6 gigs from what i have found..
