Power use license rejected!! Keygen requested

Due to a unacceptable policy change Astaro doesn't provide power use licences anymore to private astaro users.
Till now Astaro was able to keep out the keymakers because they provided the proper licences to home users like me. Now they don't do this anymore so start working and make a keygen.

Special thanks to Oliver Desch from Astaro because he really spend to much time behind a screen and has forgotten how to communicate with the rest of the world in a proper way.

I will probably stop using Astaro because me license has expired and i'm using more than 3 networkcards which cannot be used with a normal home use license.

    How has their Power User License policy changed? It has always been for Active UBB members. By active, I'm assuming they mean Contributing members, not just people who register and then lurk forever. I've got over 200 posts over a year or so. Some questions, some feedback. I don't know if I'd qualify. I'm quite Erwin doesn't.

    Can you explain me why I did receive the power use license last year? Probably because I ordered the virus extension at the same time, which I had to pay for.

    Yes, I can:
    now we have the manpower and time to check all(!) applications for a Power User License.

    Please calm down and be (positive) active on the board and you can apply for a license in some months again (btw: your postings in this thread will not be counted...) and don't start a discussion like "How many postings do I need for a Power User License?" - this depends on Oliver's personal opinion.

    There seem to be many misunderstandings about what "Home User License" (HUL) and "Power User License" (PUL) are.

    1. Both are free of charge, but limited to non-commercial, private environments.
    2. EVERYONE can get the HUL, provided it is used in the intended private environment. Just visit the registration portal, where you can apply. There is NO checking of UBB participation etc. for the HUL!
    3. The HUL limits ASL to certain restrictions. It is (roughly) the non-commercial equivalent to the smallest commercial license you can buy.
    4. You can buy the AntiVirus and Surf protection add-ons to the HUL at reduced prices. We sub-license these modules from other vendors, so we CANNOT give them away free of charge.
    5. If your home network exceeds the HUL limitations, because you are (for example) a professional with his own test lab at home, you can apply for the PUL via FAX.
    6. The PUL applications are checked by Oliver, who reads this board a lot and knows exactly who the main contributors are.
    7. The PUL is the non-commercial equivalent to the LARGEST version you can buy, minus AV and SP (see 4.).


    What we expect from a PUL "applicant" are profound technical knowledge and continued UBB participation (some social communication skills required) [:)].

    Just my own 2 cents here...
    I was a power user, since I supported a bit last year. Unfortunately I'm working a lot in last months, so I wasn't unable to spend free time on supporting... So the renewing of the PUL was (of course) rejected. 
    I don't blame Astaro for that. I can understand their policies. ASL is a powerful product, complex and worth paying for it.

    But since at home I need it (I've a powerful geek test lab [;)]th ASL.
    That's also a good way to learn [;)]

    PS Of course I'll keep promoting ASL when I have the chance, since is a very valuable software.

    Hi emgadmin,
    if you spend the time needed for re-building the ASL functionality in the UBB instead, you would probably qualify as the most active poster ever - and I think that Oliver would honor this, too

    Maybe it's just geek-envy speaking here  , but I'm curious:  just what sort of home networks are you guys putting together that can't be handled by 3 NICs, 10 VPN tunnels, and 10 IPs?  I would think that much over that would *have* to involve professional consulting and/or hosting that pushes the limits of the   private home user , but then maybe my dreams are too small. . .   

    The home-use license seems pretty generous to me.  I just wish I could afford broadband so I could take advantage of it!!

    I said that I'll build a firewall with the features I use mainly of ASL,
    not ALL the features of it...
    like
    * qos
    * pptp vpn
    * 4 nics (planned to add another) for inet/lan/dmz/dmz-test
    * dhcpd
    * daemon monitoring
    * intrusion detection
    * fancy graphs [;)]
    * network accounting
    * mail scanning
    * and, of course, firewalling [:)]

    These feature could be easily setup with a linux box.
    What's not easy is a cool webadmin gui like the ASL one.
    But I can live without it [;)] 

    and of course the setup process will take longer than installing ASL itself

    ASL rulez, of course. But a good NOC admin should now how to
    create a such system.
     
    P.S. andreas : of course I could spend that time on the UBB. but I'll learn more (and improve my tech skills) building up my own fw [;)]
