High Availability in 4.0

Hi There...

I notice that there are some improvements in ASL 4.0 with High Availability, but the most major problem is has not been fixed. The requirement to dedicate an ethernet port on each machine is not really acceptable, since there is no need for this.

The configurations are sent between interfaces encrypted, so that is not the problem. The hearbeats are not encrypted, but are not really a security problem.

My suggestion would be to allow the use of HA on ANY existing ethernet interface. I can do it on my other linux servers, but not ASL

I don't see the problem. Nic are cheap today, so why bother for 2 nics used only for HA? I prefer that the hardware is dedicated to 1 function only, thus being more stable & reliable.

Well, NIC's are cheap, but most motherboards do not have more than four PCI slots. Four? Why would I be using four PCI slots

1. External Interface
2. DMZ
3. Internal Interface
4. Wireless Interface

I suppose I could put the wireless on the DMZ :-)

Oh, and dual-port PCI network cards are far too expensive...

I am facing the same problem, finding a motherboard with at least 05 pci slots, this is why

1 External
1 Internal
1 DMZ (Web Server etc)
1 Protected Service network (connceted to dialin server)
1 for HA when I find a motherboard (sinff, sniff)

I agree !! Astaro should think about a more elegant solution to the problem in Version 5.0. Don´t forget Securepoint is working hard to quickly close the gap.....

Who needs a dual-port card when the D-Link Quad-port adapters work beautifully (DFE-570TX or DFE-580TX). Uses the tulip driver. Probably hard to find now that they're discountinued.

Or, think outside the box. I recently replaced my quad-port card with a single GigE card (Intel Pro 1000 T desktop adapter works just fine for

You can still get by with 3-4 NICs and have as many interfaces as you want. One for external, one for HA, and then one that dot1q trunks the wireless, dmz, and internals to your switch.

The quad card from DLINK (580) does not work with V4 (problem is confirmed by ASTARO). They promised to solve the problem in future releases.
