I am from England. BT (British Telecom) seem to have finally "released" ADSL technology to the public properly. You no longer need to buy a complete access/use package from them. Instead of having to choose from a home package with an Alcatel USB modem, or a business package with a router/hub and static IP addresses for your network, you can finally just get an ADSL "line" and do with it what you want. Much the same as you are able to do with ISDN.
The most important change then, is that the costs are greatly reduced, since you no longer have to pay for equipment which may or may not fully suit your needs.
Now, I feel it is imperative that Astaro become a part of this change. Astaro's firewall product is immensly superb. It is incredibly reliable and feature rich, a product which shines with perfection in what it sets out to do.
An Astaro firewall is perfect when used to its full potential. By this I am thinking of a Microsoft based local-area network with MS Exchange Server running for messaging (as is most desireable for the majority of businesses), and an Astaro firewall hooked up to a live internet line.
The firewall allows secure use of the Internet to users of the LAN, and also receives (and virus checks) emails for the company, which it then forwards to the internal MS Exchange Server.
Geeeeeeeees.. whats got me saying this is that Demon Internet in the UK (one of the major ISPs here) will give a 512Kb ADSL line for £28.99 per month (inclusive of VAT) and a £50 setup charge. And most importantly, you are given a static IP address. Anually thats like £350 a year. Most small businesses would easily spend that on tech-support or consultancy call-out charges to fix intermittant problems with their existing Internet systems.
The Internet is now ALIVE for many people. And can be for many more. Email can be used the way it was supposed to be (direct-to-destination SMTP) instead of botched with POP3 mail boxes and intermittant collection schedules.
*HOWEVER* back to Astaro. I have the utmost regard for this company, because of the quality of their product and I think they *need* to be a part of this change. Think about it, the Internet is now open to small businesses. The unsurity and question of "the internet" is now clearly answered for small businesses.
Astaro need to position themselves as a provider in this hot area. Trust me, this technology will go like *HOT CAKES*. I know this because I for one will be moving many of my customers over to it very soon.
Astaro need to support some kind of PCI ADSL Interface Card. A business deciding to get an ADSL line will *have* to buy their own equipment. If Astaro be this equipment by means of an ADSL NIC, then this would be perfect, and also defeat the need for paying for more than one public IP address from the ISP (you wouldn't need to get a public IP for the firewall, since this would be default.).
Surely other consultants who deal with small businesses can see how important and good this change is ?
I'm a self employed consultant working from home and I am about to order this new Do-It-Yourself ADSL service for myself.
