Minimal Hardware requirements?

Hello!
I just saw your software on the fresmeat site. i want to install a new firewall at home and for that i bought an old p-90 with 64mb ram and 500mb harddisk. i hoped this is enough for a firewall were only 3 pc's are behind and a web/mail/ftp-server.
can a run astaro on this machine?

    The installation won't complete without at least a 1.5 GB drive.

    I think all the reporting / GUI interface formatting are what drives up the performance requirement of the CPU - you're right, just the control of the 2 NICs would work with a 1st generation Pentium. I think the minimum requirement is P133.

    Hi Harald,

    You'll need a larger harddrive (IDE only), at least 1.5GB. Also, I think the NICs have to be PCI.

    i have 2 pci network cards in this pc. but i wonder why i need so much diskspace?
    my lan-connection is for download 300kbit and upload 64kbit, so i think the firewall will not need so much cpu power?

    if your worried about bloat, just cruise on over to http://www.smoothwall.org   all ya need is a 486 and 60MB open on a harddrive.  isa / pci whatever it all works!

    I've been looking into a firewall machine too, and you may like to look into the solution I have chosen - Smoothwall - http://www.smoothwall.org/ 

    I have installed it on a 486DX4100 with 200M hard disk and ISA NIC and 64M.  It is now running on a P100 following an upgrade.

    glad ya mentioned the specifics on your box, I have a 486/dx-2/66MHz with only 28MB ram here a 540MB maxtor  with lots of room to spare.

    I like Astaro, it rocks. Unfortunately it makes little sense to pay for GPL stuff that also has a real confusing GPL non GPL installation routine that is really really dire. Libnewt or GTK is your friend guys. I am using the 0.9.8 beta of SmoothWall a Uk based solution that I got off the front cover of Maximum Linux in the US. Lots of small businesses in Poland are using it - it's got everything Astaro has but is easier to install has more functionality and it supports my ADSL ISDN and leased line with a really cute SSH client built into the webfrontend. There wasn't much documentation but my cat could have installed it - it was soooo simple.

    I don't think thats a terribly fair comparison at all. I have just been playing with the latest BETA smoothwall and the latest ASL back to back (actually 1.79x - they released 1.8 that evening!!!). As far as I am aware the Beta isn't even available yet on their own conference (possibly not true) and I had one of the developers with me. Astaro & Smoothwall are not even close to being the same product. ASL is far ahead of smoothwall in just about every respect (VPN, Any filters at all, various NAT implementations, reporting, virus checking, up2dates, etc etc etc etc etc).

    Smoothwall is a nice product (as far as it goes) - but its months behind ASL and as far as I can tell moving along slower. 

    Yes its hardware requirement is less - no VPN - less reporting detail and it does support ISA cards but ASL seems to be shaping up to an Industrial grade product whereas Smoothwall looks like (currently) very much a home product with little or no configuration - it does support DHCP on the external interface and the installation program is probably better (thats not saying that ASL is bad). It really depends what you are looking for

    They do both seem to have the same problem with the install program that neither like complex subnets (255.255.254.0) on the internal interface during install. 

    ASL is certainly the far more complete product and can be configured in a much more secure manner currently (if you have a "spyware" program on your internal network with Smoothwall as your firewall - then smoothwall isn't going to help. ASL OTOH might - depending upon how its configured.

    Your choice of what to use - but at least try to be fair when comparing one product with another !

    BTW the smoothie dev liked the ASL front end.

    SmoothWall is certainly not simply a "home" product, and neither is its development moving "slowly". I have spent a lot of time talking to the developers, and it so far seems that smoothie is going to scare the shit outta all other firewall developers. It's developing rapidly....and what it hasn't got yet, I'm sure a quick word to the development team will see it included in the subsequent version...and more.

    So watch yourselves Astaro. You're not going to know what hit you.

    And as I said its free! (ie no money) If you wanna waste your hard earned money on a product that hasnt got the same promise as Smoothie...then that is up to you....

    but dont say I didn't warn you.
