different kernels do it differently...pae uses pages of ram to swap out to make it look like it can go around the 32 bit limit..remember emm386.exe days? Stick with 3 gigs so you aren't setting yourself up for possible memory access errors, performance problems..etc etc. The astaro kernel is a hardned feature limited kernel...so depending on your motherboard, peripherals(including ALL internal interconnects)..etc etc PAE may not actually help you. Your best bet is to get the machine to 3 gigs or get 64 bit compliant hardware.
