[8.940][MYTH] pgsql fails to start - "su: incorrect password"

Can't start or stop from command line. Did a command line password reset to no avail. Tried to force re-init of postgresql.conf, but got the password error.

I've kept this VM, so I can fire it up if any developer wants to look. I created a new VM, imported the backup from last night and have no further problems.

Different time zones, different office hours... our main postgres developer is already at home ;-)

I know this problem was caused by my machine losing power when the VM with UTM 9 running. This has happened several times, and is easily fixed by reloading and restoring, but I wonder if this is normal.

How can I reset the password (which one? to what?) so I can see if that's the only problem?

In this case you most likely suffer from a filesystem corruption. There's probably even more broken than a simple password. I'm not sure if anythin other than a reinstall would help in this case...

Please grep the relevant logfiles for filesystem related errors around the time you booted the system.

In the newer VM, the problem was resolved after doing a shutdown from WebAdmin. In the older VM, this did not resolve the issue.

Unless you think there's something to be gained from researching this further, I'd say MYTH. [;)]

I had a similar problem in v7 I believe, trying to rebuild the database. Root access was denied. However I was able to su as postgres and run the rebuild commands without any problems. I didn't dig into why root access was denied but when a major database corruption occurs, anything is possible.

@Bill: it's not the database that got corrupted, it's the filesystem itself
