It appears that V9 suffers from the same readability issues as these forums.
This "disease" seems to have spread ...

Isn't that a little harsh, Bob? We're publishing this beta to get feedback from you and to improve the whole product, including the UI. We had similar problems in the beginning of V8 and we improved the V8 UI a lot, do you remember? After all it's the first V9 beta, so there's plenty of time for improvements.

Kai, please don't mis-interpret my frankness about "design" as harshness towards the developers!

Maybe you're just now learning about it, but this is not about the details - it is a general issue with all of the Sophos & Astaro web sites.  I posted about that last month in APB for a Graphics Designer!

Someone has to tell Sophos that they need to have a profesional graphics designer look at these sites and figure out how to get rid of the light-blue-on-lighter-blue-and-white theme everywhere.  It is difficult to read and unattractive.

If I knew anything about picking colors and creating attracive designs, I'd make a suggestion, but I'm smart enough to know how ignorant I am in that domain! [;)]

I have to agree with the others, the new design has a too high contrast and on the other hand no easily recognizable sections.
Maybe darkening the background and the borders reduces the stress on the eyes.

Hope to lose because Astaro is a great product.
By the way:
Form follows function
with the old gui and the old icons it s really easy to see the configuration of  large numbers of rules with one look.
I don t know how old other admin are but my eyes aren' t the best. The combination of colours, icons and forms really helps me to manage an Astaro.
For example the pencil is a clear and simple icon to see that a log is written. 
Perhaps you should give a newbie both designs and ask him which one helps doing the first steps.

I've seen that post, and yes, i agree, it's a general issue. Our web designers are in a bind: we need to change our look&feel to match the Sophos design, even when we feel a little uncomfortable with the results. And believe me, they are working constantly to improve the design.

Actually, that's what we are doing. It just takes a little longer, now that we are part of a such larger company. There are more parties involved and so on...

 I'm smart enough to know how ignorant I am in that domain! [;)]

I had the chance to briefly chat with Gert, and we talked about this issue too. He will discuss this whole issue with our web guys in the next days to find a way to make it easier and more obvious again.

In the meantime, please give us feedback which parts of the webadmin need the most attention, okay? We've already have the packet filter on our list, but if there are other parts that are really worse than in V8, please let us know (screenshots welcome!).

I agree.  It actually seems to hurt my eyes after about 10 minutes.

Why is it necessary to change a working interface?
Please tell us the technical reasons if there are any. 
If there are not good reasons it seems as if marketing and  finance take controll over astaro. 
I have not seen any good product managed by finance and marketing people in the last 30 years.
In other words: sooner or later it will kill astaro if features and functions are defined by non-technicals.

The short answer is simply "There are no technical reasons", but please let me explain it a little more in detail.

What you all are complaining about, the new and brighter colors, is merely change of color in the UI. From a technical perspective, it's mostly the same code that we use since Version 7. Yes, V7 and V8 look different, but under the hood we've used the same technologies and the same software stack. There have been changes on those lower level, and they appeared constantly and gradually which each release, mainly through bugfixes, but also through the new features that we added to the product. From a technical perspective, the differences between V7 and V8 are much larger than the ones between V8 and V9. So, from my point of view, we haven't even changed the interface (at least we haven't changed it more than we usually do for a release), we merely changed the colors.

Now for the reason why we changed the colors:
We are now a part of Sophos, and we have to adopt the Sophos brand DNA (btw: when did the world stop calling this thing "corporate identity"?) to make the ASG look like a Sophos product. It's that simple.

Does this make sense? I think it does.

Do you have to like it? No, but maybe (hopefully) you'll get used to it.

As i said earlier in this thread, we're working on the UI to overcome the issues that we've introduced with the bright colors. Your feedback on this is very welcome.

Your conclusions are.. well let's call it "bogus".

First of all, the way we decide which new features get introduced hasn't changed at all: there's still feature.astaro.com, and we also get valuable feedback from personal contacts on roadshows, trade fairs, conferences and so on.

Second, we still do this public beta runs (*hint* *hint* ;-) ), to keep you early in the loop.

Third, the driving departments are Product Management and Sales (yes, i know i'm a nitpicker at times), although i have to admit that we're working hand in hand with marketing when it comes to the visuals, because the marketing team is coordinating the brand related things.

... it will kill astaro ...

Sorry, but i think this is totally overdrawn...

I'll jump into this.  It's obvious marketing is driving this ui makeover.  Sophos's site is painful to look at with white on white.  All they have to do is look at other sites on the web.  It's time for them to let go of this painful UI across their entire line and get a different design.  this goes for their site, astaro's ui..and everything else.  This kind of thing CAN drive business away.
