actually no.  the 32 bit version can't really do over 3.5 gigs.  when they up the ram in the new appliances(or if you upgrade using software) and goto 4 or more gigs you'll have to do a reinstall.  The appliances are loaded with 64 bit anyway.  Any ram usage savings are insignificant between 32 bit and 64 bit.

Based on this, it'd seem more intelligent for Sophos to preset the value during the installer based on the CPU's reported capabilities: if normal Linux mechanisms would allow a 64-bit kernel to run, preset to "" rather than "".

Alternatively, add yet a little more intelligence that if a 64-bit kernel can run and perhaps other conditions are not satisfied (ie some really old x86-64 CPUs might perform better on the 32-bit kernel).

if the cpu is 64 bit capable there is zero tangible benefit to 32 bit software.

For software installs, I could see two (since it's only the kernel and not the userland):

1) A device driver that doesn't play nice with a 64-bit kernel
2) If there happens to be some CPU that can do 64-bit but is slower on a 64-bit kernel (I can't be certain if such a CPU does or does not exist).

For all hardware appliances, I'd expect Sophos to make the right decision based on their internal testing of a particular revision of a particular appliance.

actually there are some of the programs that are 64 bit and 32 bit..There isn't a cpu that has a performance hit for 64 bit.  32 bit is not a widely deployed scenario on new installs.  The hardware support in UTM is limited and not a general set so the device compatibility with 64 bit isn't a real issue either.  If UTM was built on a the full kernel of Linux device driver conflicts MIGHT be an issue...but in reality even on the full kernel this is a minor and low volume issue.  UTM's drivers are validated and are much more stable than the general release.  There's really no reason to stay with 32 bit..unless you ask.."what if"...it's time for "what if" to be relegated to it's place in terms of UTM.
