[9.165][FEATURE] RED: PPPoE support

Unfortunately this feature will not make it into 9.2. Sorry for that.

It is pure madness that you have to deploy a router with every RED, just because the RED does not do the PPPoE protocol - which is "just" a software issue. This gives so much room for errors when deploying, let alone security. I'm honestly a fan of the Sophos UTMs, but this is frustrating to say the least. Especially since it was planned for 9.2.

It think this is a long known and wanted feature.
With USB Provisioning you have mastered the first step.
Please try the second in 9.2.

You've got to be kidding  - the feature is now turned back to "under review" and is only being *considered* for UTM v10 release.
To me this is the first hint at a v10 release and it sounds like it is quite far away. I guess we are now talking years instead of weeks or month for this feature. If it will be implemented at all...
Seriously, since I am looking for long-term solutions for customers I am interested to know a bit more about the plans for this feature. Obviously it is a pretty badly wanted feature, 235 votes right now and counting.
Could somebody from Astaro with a technical background shed some light on this, why this feature is being pushed so far away? And comment on the expected timeframe for the UTM v10 release?

From a technical perspective, the main problem that has to be solved is how to get the configuration to the device. This must be done somehow via USB instead of the provisioning server. So it's not just the PPPoE feature itself but some other homework to do first.

True, but USB provisioning has been already implemented, right?

Another idea: you connect the RED to the provisioning server on the deploying site, then send them out to remote sites. Should be even more comfortable than via USB. 

Right now the REDs have a fallback mechanism implemented (DHCP, Tunnels...). I could imagine you could do that also with PPPoE. For example you could provision them with USB or the provisioning Server and after 10 failed PPPoE attempts they fall back to DHCP (fixed IP, UMTS...) for one attempt, then again PPPoE.


Could you also elaborate on the timeframe for release v10?

Of course, as I work for SOPHOS, I know about the *internal* roadmap. But also of course I can't and won't make anything on that public, I'm not doing any press or customer relations stuff, I'm just a QA technician.

But only that the feature has been delayed does not mean you have to wait for it until v10. And how comes you think that v10 comes after v9.2? There have been multiple major in-between releases in the past (there even was a v7.500!). Remember, for us, a major version release is x.Yzz where Y increases. And there were maintenance releases introducing new features, so I don't think it has to take that long. Rest assured, it will come as soon as doable after checking priorities.

Regarding your idea: It would even be possible to attempt trying PPPoE and DHCP at the same time, not only one after the other.

It was me who marked the "PPPoE" feature as 'planned' in the feature portal. I was really hoping to get it done for version 9.2, but due to an internal re-prioritization (focusing on bugfixing and stability), we decided to re-schedule it for the next feature release, which could be V10 (this hasn't been decided upon yet). I'm sorry for any disappointment this might have caused.

Any updates on this issue, will it be included in 9.3 or 10.0 (or even 10.1)?
