how do i log/diagnose this behavior

so you agree that downtime would be more clear? What to test is following: You e.g. start monitoring at 12 PM. Within the next 24 hours you disconnect the AP for e.g. 1 hour and check the next day at 12 PM if the uptime should be 23 hours.
