WiFi Access Points

Hi Phil,

If you are referring to the Astaro AP-10/30/50 series of WiFi AP's, you do need a subscription to use them.

"Off the Shelf" (DLink, Linkysys, etc) WiFi AP's are treated like any other regular network device so don't need any special licensing to use them, they just don't work with the Wireless Security feature of Astaro.

Thanks for your reply. So as a novice, I'm guessing I need to create/assign an interface, but how do I then go about setting the SSID/passphrase? Also, can Astaro allow me to change the wifi signal strength? I've seen a setting in pfSense, where the user enters "99" to max out the signal - is this available in Astaro?

With Astaro, when using an Astaro branded AP, you would set the SSID/passphrase at Wireless Security>>Wireless Networks.  tx power will be configurable in v9.  [:)]

As Drew said, you cannot use any of the Wireless management features of the Astaro without the Wireless Security Subscription -- the Essential base license does not include this feature.

That said... you had another question regarding signal strength adjustments of Astaro Access Points.  Currently (as of Version 8.301) you cannot adjust signal strength of the Access Points -- however, in the UTM9 beta (due for GA in July I think), I do see the ability to adjust the signal strength of individual access points, so that feature is on the way.

So just to be 100% clear, when running Essential Edition with a generic WAP (dlink for eg) there is no way to set an SSID or passphrase?

Not on the Astaro.  This would need to be set on the generic WAP itself.  The Astaro Wireless integration is ONLY if you are using Astaro APs and have a wireless security license.

As a side note, I'm using the Essential version at home because I have > 50 internal IPs, but will I be well protected against attack etc? I understand I won't have the extra's that come with the home version but I'm not looking for bandwidth management etc.

the essential version is basically a packet filter and that's it.  goto my.astaro.com and create an account then create a home license...you'll get the full suite of protection then.

With this in mind, would you still recommend the essential version (bearing in mind its for home use) or opt for something like pfSense?
