Trouble with Essential Firewall on ASG220

Well, it´s not so easy to blame Astaro for the license problems you describe.

The reason why it is not THAT easy is that it is very likely that the ASG 220 you have bought (at ebay  perhaps?) is a hardware that someone has intentionally deactivated. Astaro has set up a "hardware replacement program" in 2009 which enabled owners of an old ASG 220 Rev. 1 to upgrade this machine to a NEW ASG 220 (rev. 3) by spendng a small amount of money, only a part of the real costs of the new hardware.

As a "goddie", Astaro did not enforce the participants of the replacement program to sent their old ASGs back to Astaro, but allowed them to keep the old boxes for their own usage - e.g. for having a experimental appliance in their labs, using them for "home usage" or whatever. However, the deal was: you get a new appliance, you keep the old appliance, but the LICENSE which was formerly bound to the OLD appliance will be bound then to the NEW appliance. The OLD appliance cannot be used actively any more.

So most probably you bought such an old, license-free appliance, for which you - of course - now cannot get an official "appliance license" (because the original owner of the appliance still holds the appliance license, this cannot be "doubled").

What Astaro offers you is that you still can use this appliance for FREE but you have to install the "software license", thus you have to install a "software ISO" on the HW appliance. To be able to do this, follow the steps earlier mentioned in this thread (format the HDD before and so).
After this, you have
- an ASG software version (no cost)
- with a ASG software essential license  (no cost)
- running on a Astaro hardware (just what you paid at ebay)

I think this is fair.  If you don´t think, and my assumption whith the "hardware replacement program" was right, you shouldn´t blame Astaro, but the person who has sold you this used hardware and didn´t tell you that you cannot get a "official appliance license" for it.

I don't blame Astaro for having a policy that they want to enforce--but it just wasn't clear and seems unnecessarily more complex than it needs to be. We were one of the ones that did the hardware replacement program and had the leftover hardware. So I thought it would be nice to use it. Someone earlier in the thread said that the esential license should work fine on a hardware install--just download the hardware ISO. So that's what I tried and it didn't work, so that reply was wrong in my opinion because why should an essential license have two different versions--one for hardware and one for software? Why not make it universal so that it is accepted by either? What is the point? It just increases the confusion on what people like me should do.

So to the point, I did install the software appliance ISO on it and it took the license fine although I had to apply it twice to get it to stick. On the first reboot it lost it again but the second application of the same license seems to be ok and sticking now. Hopefully this thread will be helpful to others trying to do the same thing--don't waste time trying to do the hardware ISO because it most likely won't work. Go right for the software appliance ISO after wiping the drive with something like DBAN.

I found this very helpful since I dont know where to start. Thanks pcnetwrx, you saved me hours of grief however I will add one thing. After install as you stated, ETh0 was a no go. BUG city...luckily I tried ethernet 4 WTF it pinged! Thanks again as your post summed up what I wanted. Mike
