Trouble with Essential Firewall on ASG220

Hi there,

the company i work for recently bought a used ASG220 (HW rev. 1). I tried to install the latest firmare with the appropriate image by booting from an external DVD-burner which didn't work (although CD-ROM is configured as first boot-device in the BIOS). Unfortunately we didn't get the VGA adapter together with the ASG220 so we can only debug on terminal via serial connection. But when using the serial connection you can only see the POST-Screen and the login-prompt but nothing in between which might be helpful in debugging the i-dont-boot-from-cd-rom-situation. 

Anyway, the biggest trouble is that a nice lady from Astaro sales-department told me that we cannot use the essential firewall license on the ASG220 unless we format the hard-drive (she said that there is some data on the hard-drive telling "i am an ASG220 and i only eat commercial licenses!"). She wasn't 100% sure so i desperately need an advise from someone regarding whether this will work or not BEFORE i fdisk/mke2fs the box.

Has anyone experience and/or advise which will make us using that ASG220 together with the essential firewall license? Tanks in advance for any helpful replies!

    Instead of using the forum search, I use google and include site:astaro.org to limit the search to just these forums.

    The "Essential Firewall" is available for Software AND for HArdware. 
    This means just grab the latest ISO for Hardware Appliances and install it. 
    It will automatically enable the "Essential Firewall" and you can use the Astaro Firewall for free.
    To whom did you talk nerdpole, i just want to make sure, all astaro sales personal can communicate the right message.

    So if I am already running the latest ISO for Hardware Appliances with an expiring professional license, wouldn't I be able just to install the new Essential Firewall license? It doesn't want to take it saying that it's an invalid license. Must I wipe it out just to put the same thing back on it? That doesn't seem to make sense.

    Hmmm. No answers yet. I was hoping that there would just be a directory or file I could delete where I could then have it accept the Essential license without wiping out the whole thing. Is that possible?

    Yeah, my understanding is that you'll have to wipe and reload to switch license types.  Don't forget to save a config backup before you do, so you can reapply it after the install.
     
    BTW, you may have a hell of a time performance wise going forward with a V1 220.  Hardware limited to 512MB RAM.  You would be better off doing a software install on an old PC or server that can take 1GB+ RAM.

    Ok, I tried wiping out an old ASG-120 V1 realizing that performance may be a tad slow, but thinking that since it isn't going to be doing anything but packet filtering that it shouldn't be horrible. And it does seem that there is plenty of RAM left after the wiping and reinstall.

    But when I get to licensing, I am still getting that the license is invalid after loading up 7.504. I am operating under the premise that I can use the ASG hardware ISO per this forum, but had to wipe it out to change license types. Is that not correct? Do I just have a bad license somehow? I tried redownloading the license because somewhere else it said that maybe licenses attached to emails weren't good, but that didn't help either. Any idea what I might be doing wrong?

    1. how did you wipe it?

    2. which ISO did you use to re-install?

    3. what version is the license?
    you can upgrade the version at my.astaro.com
