Trouble with Essential Firewall on ASG220

Hi there,

the company i work for recently bought a used ASG220 (HW rev. 1). I tried to install the latest firmare with the appropriate image by booting from an external DVD-burner which didn't work (although CD-ROM is configured as first boot-device in the BIOS). Unfortunately we didn't get the VGA adapter together with the ASG220 so we can only debug on terminal via serial connection. But when using the serial connection you can only see the POST-Screen and the login-prompt but nothing in between which might be helpful in debugging the i-dont-boot-from-cd-rom-situation. 

Anyway, the biggest trouble is that a nice lady from Astaro sales-department told me that we cannot use the essential firewall license on the ASG220 unless we format the hard-drive (she said that there is some data on the hard-drive telling "i am an ASG220 and i only eat commercial licenses!"). She wasn't 100% sure so i desperately need an advise from someone regarding whether this will work or not BEFORE i fdisk/mke2fs the box.

Has anyone experience and/or advise which will make us using that ASG220 together with the essential firewall license? Tanks in advance for any helpful replies!

    You have  installed the ASG SSO ISO so your appliance is a "full" Astaro  ASG appliance (no "software appliance on a Astaro hardware"), so you  must also use a "appliance license". 

    If you buy a ASG HW applaince you should automatically get a licence key  (or, to be more precise, an activation key with which you can generate  your non-expiring "essential firewall" license.

    Since this is old, retired hardware that I was trying to make useful again, and since I can't seem to locate any keys let alone know how to differentiate which type of license I am trying to obtain (hardware or software), it sounds like the easiest solution is just to go with installing the software appliance ISO on it with the license I have already obtained and see how that goes.

    I undertstand that this is a free version that doesn't have the product support that a paid version has, but it seems to me that this process couldn't be made much more difficult than it already is. Not that I'm an expert or anything but I was able to successfully support our church's paid firewall for the past 3 years as well as my home version for the same time period without much difficulty. Now it seems like pulling teeth to try to get this set up.

    And by the way, why does the free essential firewall license ask for reseller information anyway as required fields? Just a suggestion, after the 30 day trial ends maybe have both the hardware version and software appliance version revert to the free essential firewall mode with no license file required and eliminate all of this nonsense of trying to match versions of licenses with versions of software?
