How do I update an Astaro Essential Firewall to the latest version?
After installing a clean 7.500 I uploaded the license key. Then I noticed that automatic Firmware downloads are no longer possible ("Automatic firmware download is disabled as you do not have a support subscription or your subscription is expired!"). OK, obviously I've to do this manually I thought. The Upload of the 7.501 U2D package works fine, but when I clicked on "Update to latest version now" I get the error message: "You don't have a valid maintenance subscription.".
I'm a little bit confused so here are some questions:

1) How do I upgrade an Astaro Essential Firewall without any subscriptions? Currently the only way I found is to save the config, do a fresh install with the latest version, install all U2D packages and then reimport the config. I hope this is not the suggested solution ;-)

2) Is "Network Security" a new kind of subscription package or is this simply an other name for the old "Basic License"?

3) Is it possible to buy "Standard Support" (former Gold Support?) without the "Network Security" license?

    Are you a home or business user?

    If business, contact your reseller for a renewal.

    If home, check my.astaro.com for free licensing.

    When you say "network security license", what are you referring to? IPS? I think the IPS has been in the standard ('professional') licenses for quite some time.

    the Astaro Essential Firewall is intended for business use, it would not make sense to use this kind of license for private use as it has a reduced feature set compared to the home license.
    Btw. the update problem would not occur with a home license.


    If business, contact your reseller for a renewal.


    There's no reseller necessary for the free Essential Firewall (only if I need (or able) to buy extra support, but this question is not answered yet.


    When you say "network security license", what are you referring to?


    I refer to the license option "Network Security" shown at Management -> Licensing -> Overview at the Essential Firewall (this is only shown if an Essential license key is installed).

    I had the same Problem with the new Essential Version. There is always the message "You don't have a valid maintenance subscription.". 

    As you described you can Upload the up2date Package manual:

    Management -> Up2date -> Advanced -> Manual ... upload

    Then connect to your ASG via SSH with loginuser and type su and the root password. 

    You can use the auisys.plx command to update to a new version. There should be a knowledgebase article for this auisys.plx command. 

    Try "auisys.plx --help" to see all options. 

    With this command it is possible update the version, but I am not sure if this is what Astaro realy want. Maybe it is not allowed to update an essential Version. 

    Hopefully there will be an answer from Astaro direct.

    Hi there guys, 

    we are currently checking this. 

    Our expectation is, that with the essential firewall edition, you only manual updates, this means that you have to download the update from the Download Server, upload it into webadmin and install it through the GUI.

    If this is not working as expected, we will fix it.

    There are some strange effects if you install the essential license in a 7.401 and try to update. You can upload the up2date packages and everything seems to be good, but they will not show up for installation.

    If you apply a up2date-enabled license after that, the packages will show up. 

    Is this a normal behavior?

    I have had the same problem that Paketschubser experienced.  I was able to download the updates from the website, and uploaded them to the Essentials Firewall, but Up2date will not let me apply the updates.  On the "Available firmware updates" section of "Management >> Up2date" when I click "install" beside the firmware that I want to apply I get a message that says "You don't have a valid maintenance subscription".
    Up2date did not complain when I tried to schedule the firmware update to be applied late tonight.  I will check in tomorrow, and see if it succeeded or not.

    Scheduling an installation time did work.  My Essentials Firewall is now running 7.502 without having to go to the command line.  As mentioned above, clicking install would not work to install updates that I had manually downloaded, but scheduling a time for the update did work.
