[7.903][QUESTION][ANSWERED] daily and weekly reports

Hi,
at the moment every time my ASG is restarted the packet filter security shows over 5000 violations on the graph due to the ASG logging into every one of the major DNS.
The weekly report graph only shows just over 1000 violations.
The figures under the graph showing peak, average, minimum are correct but nothe axis values..

Why are the graphs so different?

Can you post some screenshots please?

Why don't use the DNS forwarder of your ISP?

Hi kbr,
I do use the DNS forwarders and that is all. I have logged this issue a number of times in the past in the production forums and never really received an satisfactory answer.
I am not the only one that has this problem with the DNS.

The attachment is an extract from the weekly report.

Why are the graphs so different?

The weekly graphs are showing the averaged data. The max-value is printed in the legend below the graph, but the actual graph that you see is the average one. The reason why we choose to only show the average value is, that if you would also put in the maximum values, the averages would simply disappear.

The reason why the average data is lower than the maximum is clear to you, isn't it?

Thank you for the explanation.

But not wanting to be too picky, the graph shows something other than the weekly average which is approx 19.00

I expect in the case of a home user like myself the graphs are hard to draw with any relevant meaning.

well, the average is the average over the whole week, and therefor 19 as a value makes totally sense to me. The problem is that the peek is 500 times as much as the average, but this is a general problem with statistics.

The graph is supposed to be showing the average not some arbitrary peak.

The graph shows over 1000.

In the end it really is only a quick indicator that there has been some activity and who ever is reviewing the graph should look at daily reports or logs for more accurate detail.

No, nothing like that. In an earlier post you explained that the graphs showed the average for the week that was all.

Your explanation was good. There isn't a bug so this thread can be closed if you like.
