[7.902][FEATURE][CLOSED] Install from USB key

There should be support for installing from a USB key. It's also eco-friendly [:D]

    Heyyy, Joffer took the plunge - time to change your signature!

    If the Astaro sees a USB memory stick, it assumes there's an unencrypted backup on it, and attempts to restore a configuration from it.  If it sees a CDROM, it assumes that it's supposed to install from scratch; the Astaro Smart Installer USB stick has firmware that emulates a CDROM.

    I closed this one because we already provide such an USB-Stick installation method. 

    In addition to what Bob said: We don't build and provide .ISO files for it every week though, mostly because of "lack of interest" from the outside world (but also, to a lesser degree, for disk space reason).

    If you have one the USB Sticks and really need that ISO, contact flichtenheld via PM.

    Is that special Astaro provided USB memory sticks? I'm asking for this option, since it's more convenient, and my Jetway systems doesn't have a CD-ROM installed in the small case. I have an usb-2-pata/sata dongle so I managed to install today.

    Anyway, if I'm that stupid and leave the USB memory stick with the astaro setup files in the astaro after I have installed astaro, then it's my own fault. I would always remove it, as I do with the install CD..

    Hi,
    The USB installer sticks don't seem to be widely available, even to paying customers. (I've seen resellers state here that they're out.) Also, do they work on any system, or only on appliances?

    Could Astaro provide installers that would work from ANY USB CD?
    See Knoppix, et. al., for examples of USB-bootable linux systems.

    In this case, you can use the same ISO for both CDR and USB sticks; no need to maintain two CD images.

    Barry, wouldn't it be a bit of a security thing that you can't run an OS off a USB stick?

    Would it? Can't see the problem of running an OS off a USB stick, LiveCD or Installer, or a complete system on a stick. Either you have control of your server or you don't.
    I'm sorry, but I just don't see what big security issue this is.

    I just want to use a tool like 'unetbootin' and write the iso to the USB stick and boot from it so that I can install Astaro from a USB stick. Faster, easier and like my cute small jetway itx systems, some servers don't have a CD/DVD-ROM.


    I'm also a fan of MultiBootUSB which Barry linked to. It's great to have a "universal" USB pen with lots of .iso files (even Win7 goes on there)  and just choose which to start during boot.

    maybe just a small misunderstanding:

    Running a System off a write protected media is problematic in case you want to write updates (or patterns) to the filesystem. 

    The other aspect, and i guess that that is what Bob meant, is that by disabling USB completely you gain additional physical security:

    • no usb => no usb-keyboard => no usb-keylogger
    • no usb => no usb-stick with a bootable filesystem => not able to reboot the machine and access the HDD from the OS booted from the usb-stick


    But i think you're meaning the installation from CD/USB stick, aren't you?

    I would love to be able to install form a usb stick to whatever hardware i wanted to use..is that option available?
