This is a known Problem with IE (I guess you used that one). Yes it is ugly but we don' t have enough space at all places to just increase width of the dropdown menus.
In Firefox, the menu that drops down is maximized correctly even if the initial dropdown menu is smaller. So please consider another browser as an easy workaround for this specific problem.
Fixing this for good is a no go for v7.500 because it involves replacing a whole widget that is being used at many places.
