[FEATURE] [7.350] Realtek 8169 driver for gigE NICs?

This is in preparation, but it's unsure wether it will land in 7.400.

We have been running Astaro V6 and V7 on RealTek 8169 hardware for some time.  There have been issues both in V6 and V7 with the 8169 driver.  The only problem that we were experiencing within V7 was HA support and the RealTek 8169.  However, Astaro was able to create a work-around to the HA issue, and we are no longer experiencing any other problems at this time.

Be warned however, the RealTek NIC must identify itself as a RealTek 8169 NIC and not an 8110.  The best rule of thumb, is to use only hardware that is tested and certified on the Astaro HCL.  If the hardware is not on the list, chances are the hardware in question will have issues.

My understanding is that the 8110sc cards are not currently recognized by the Astaro kernel, but that the current Linux Realtek r8169 driver should fix that.

I am currently interested in this for home use, do I don't need HA, but VLAN support would be nice.

have a look at MikroTik's RouterBOARD 44g. Very stable, very cheap.

But will ASG recognize the Realtek 8169SC chipset and allow 1 GbE operation?
They also list a 44GV that uses the VIA VT6122 chips.

While it's true that most Mini-ITX Enclosures won't support a full height PCI card, some do with a PCI riser card.
The Morex 2699B (Which I'm using) will support one PCI card horizontally using a riser card.

Jimmy, the 8169 is listed as supported on the HCL, but I don't know if that includes the 8169SC. If it works, it'd work at 1gbps.

Hi everyone,

there are MiniITX-Boards that have optional 3xNIC daughter boards. With the onboard NIC that makes 4 NICs with no need of risercards, LP-NICs, mulitport nics, etc which is perfect for 2 lans, dmz, wan.
One major flaw however is that all such boards I know of that do support Gblan come with the same RTL8110SC chips. As those NICs obviously are not supported by astaro we have to stick with the oldschool 10/100 NICs.
To be honest, as long as there is just one lan connected to one wan (cable, dsl etc) via astaro, ther is no real need for Gbit Lan anyway. Still, some customers think that the system is outdated if it doesn't support Gblan.
Of course if you need a fast connection between lan and servers in your dmz, than gigabit lan is a must have.

So, please include drivers for those nics as they are really common especially with miniITX (small size, low power) hardware.

I've been following your various posts about RTL8110SC for a while now.
Hopefully our wishes will be heard in the near future...

I hope so, however I now have my sights set on an MSI Atom 'industrial' board, which has 2 Intel gigE NICs. Unfortunately, they're too new and need a new driver also.
The board+CPU+RAM only uses about 18watts, according to a review I saw, on mini-itx.com iirc.

For me, I want gigE for my LANDMZ. Also, I will be doing VLANs and am considering two or three internal VLANs and would like gigE there as well. I already bought a NetGear 'smart' switch, and am just waiting for a supported low-power mini-itx board with gigE.
