Dripping with sarcasm or truly thankful? Personally, compiling the kernel for an i586 vs. an i686 would benefit many users and don't see why it's not being considered.
Yeah HTMLSpinnr, you are right on this! I think without implementing i586 support they kick out a lot of home license users. But maybe thats the whole plan!?

Hi all, it would not only kick out homeusers. I have bought last month a NOKIA-IP 330 actual version (made in 2002) and i wont believe at the first moment wich CPU is in it AMD K6/2. It is not for asl use but it's fast enough for RealSecure IDS or Checkpoint FW/1 use. So can someone tell me why astaro is not running on this plattform ?
I second that. I have an EPIA mother board w/ a via C3 800mhz processor and it will not work on this, but mandrake's MNF, smoothwall, and checkpoint all run fine, and using 2 percent of my CPU resources if that. going with more powerful hardware is not an option since, my requirements include low power consumption, which the EPIA fulfills very well, and other CPU's don't. What Gives?!?!?!?! [:S]
Appliances by official partners (Pyramid) run with C3/Eden processors - so CPU power cannot be the problem. On standard T-DSL any three-digit MHz x86 should be fine I recon.
I dont know what you mean by to slow. I am running ASL on a 166MHz machine without any problems. I am using it with all features including pptp and CPU load has never been an issue.

I read a lot of your posts and I figured that you are really comfortable with the subject. I believe that if even you disagree with the policy of not suporting slow processors there must be something strange! But maybe someone of ASL can explain to us where the difficulties are.

And as I final statement I want to remember one of the reasons which brought the "hype" of Linux OS'es! It was that old, already dumped PC's could be reused for a very benefiting way. We shouldnt forget this here.
Sure Jim you are right....its always very handy to have another machine to play around with. To explain where I am coming from: I am student and I am using ASL to secure my private network. In the close future I can not of course see myself using a gigabit connection. [:)]ne. I dont really complain about the work Astaro is doing since their product is just great. Its just that I am in my examinations which will keep me busy another 6 month and my system is running fine at the moment keeping any trouble away of me. I just dont like the idea of ripping all the gear out of my rack since I could need this extra time far better for preparing my exams. Thanks for the hint of useful solution for the old 166 but I have another 166 already running offering your mentioned services. Never mind I guess I just have to see how ot goes and might invest some more time.
I think it should be up to the individual user to determine what hardware they need to support what function. Plainly a 166 is not goung to support Gigabit speeds with multiple VPN tunnels, but if a user is only using it for packet filtering and maybe some SMTP proxy duties then it's more than enough. You would think that it wouldn't be a problem for Astaro to compile in support for 586 type processors. Personally, I don't see the big deal, go get a PII-266 for US$90 and be done with it. Then you can use that "old" 166 for other things; internal DNS, SSH tunnel, FTP server, chat server, the list goes on. Do any of us really need an excuse to get another machine to mess around with any way?

As a student, I can not justify buying another computer just for firewalling and pptp access to my home network. I was in doubt as to whether or not I could afford dedicating the K6-2 to ASL, but decided it was worth it to have a great firewall that "auto-updated" itself.
Anyway.. I would like to thank Astaro, and the rest of you for a great time. I will probably still drop by once a while to see what's going on, and one day I may return, either as a home user or as a commercial customer (or both [;)] ).
In the meantime I will have to decide on what to do next, switching to Smoothwall (or other distro), keeping ASL3.2 or plain Debian+webmin, etc..

First of all hello to you all especially Jim M., I've done some work on ASL/snort/mysql i currently have a p166 with 256mb and it perfectly suits my needs, but with this version of asl, I wondered what was all of my effort for, my effort and many others.... I don't know what to say, but one thing I'll say: THIS IS FOR ASTARO ADMINS: AND I'M SHOUTING... SO YOU CAN EAR IT WELL: I WAS THINKING OF BECOMING AN ASL RESELLER HERE IN PORTUGAL I HAVE 32 COSTUMERS INTERESTED EVEN IF OUT OF THOSE 32, ONLY 20 BUY ASTARO WHICH WAS MY PROJECTION IN THE WORST CASE SCENARIO; THEY MIGHT BE PLEASED WITH THE PRODUCT AND ATRACT MORE COSTUMERS, AND SINCE I HAVEN'T TALKED TO ALL OF MY COSTUMERS WHO HAVE SOFTWARE FIREwALLS THIS NUMBER COULD INCREASE.
CONCLUSION: WITH ME YOU LOST A GREAT DEAL IN LEATING THE ONES WHO CAN'T HAVE A GREAT PC DEDICATED TO A FIREWALL OUT, BECAUSE IF YOU CAN DO THE JOB WITH A P200 WHY DO IT WITH A PII OR A PIII; AND YOU LOST COSTUMERS....
I still couldnt figure wether it is Astaro which did not implement old PI/K6 support or if it is a general kernel/middleware issue!?

In the case it is a kernel problem.....Hey guys there must be some Pro's out to solve a small problem like this!? Am I right? So please get into gear and help us poor old hardware users!
I've just installed the ASL 4.0 ISO from the Astaro ftp site on a Cyrix P266 PC. It installed fine - perhaps Pentium's are still supported in the ASL v4 code ?
HMMM Maybe it will work on my epia 800mhz.... It is a cyrix based processor. The last beta did not work, but perhaps this will. I think I will Download it and see. [:S]
I've just tried to install asl 4.0 on my P166 and it install ok, but it doesn't startup... failed to remount old initrd... same as betas next I installed smoothwall... so see ya astaro it was nice to work with you, and smoothwall also has comercial products which is great.....
No, zaga, NO. Don't go to the dark side! If you do, can you send me what you've got for that shell script for snort? I think perhaps I'll use my old P166 as a snort-inline bridge. We'll see.
