Slow PPTP

I've just set up 1.920 on a P2 350 w. 64Mb, and managed to get a W2k client connected from a dial-up ISP to our internal network via PPTP. I've noted the domain name problem, but my main problem is the speed - I've used MS VPN before, directly to a NT4 box and the speed of the ASL connection is substantially slower. Is my hardware too poor, is is this to be expected?

Hi Richard,

I just made a quick thoughput test to a similar machine here, and I get:

so, there is some packet loss, but that is to be expected using flood ping.
this is using 40Bit encryption to a Windows 2000 client. Which encryption setting do you use ?

I've discovered that someone on the internal network was transferring about 4Gb via FTP over the last few days - when I kicked him off, performance increased to the level I'd expect.
Is there any way of monitoring connections? I.e. know that an internal IP had an active FTP session, an external connection had been SNATted to an internl machine?

hi richard,

you can view the current forwarded connections by typing

cat /proc/net/ip_conntrack

on the shell.

TIP: scp a 'watch' binary on the firewall and use it for constant monitoring.

we are also planning to integrate such a watch in the webadmin.
