XG 105 IP Address / gateway IP address confusion

Hi!  New to XG but worked with SonicWALL, IPFire, etc. and confused as to the gateway IP.  The scenario is usually Comcast for business with 5 IPs and, for example, the Comcast router is first with the SonicWALL after it configured on the WAN side with one of the fixed IPs and the gateway IP in the SonicWALL configuration being the Comcast router's WAN IP.  I am confused as to what should be the IP Address and the gateway address on the Sophos? As, mentioned I would assume the IP Address would be one of the 5 available WAN fixed addresses and the Gateway IP would be the Comcast router's WAN IP but it does not work!  Any help would be appreciated!

  • Gabriel,

if you are swapping a firewall with another one, pay attention with mac-address and arp table. It can require even days before the same Ip address can be configured on the same appliance because router keep the mac-address until 2 days.

You should use the same configuration used on Sonicwall. Contact your ISP and ask for an arp-table reset.

    Regards

  • I am installing a XG 105 on an unused IP. I tested the IP by connecting a computer and manually configuring the network and it works.  The XG105 is connected, looks like it is setup OK and I can ping and traceroute in diagnostics but the computer connected to it still does not have internet access.

  • Gabriel,

make sure to create a LAN to WAN firewall rule where "match know users" checkbox is unchecked and try again.

    Thanks

  • The setup created one called #Default_Network_Policy LAN Any Host to WAN Any Host All Services

  • Still not working!  I installed a Netgear router using the same WAN IP and it works then I set-up the Sophos in bridge mode and it works.  Next I set it up with DHCP and then again with a fixed IP on the WAN side and it still does not work.  Any more ideas?

  • I solved my problem!

Under CONFIGURE/NETWORK/DHCP/Default DHCP Server/DNS Server check Use Device's DNS Settings.

Very frustrating and time consuming experience! I use SonicWall for my customers but I saw a SOPHOS presentation and liked the capability of integrating and managing firewalls and AV and the SSL VPN capability which can get expensive on the SonicWall. At this point I did not test the SSL VPN and am hopping to have a better experience than what I just had with the initial configuration.
