Is the UTM 110/120 enough for XG Firewall with a 70Mb/s connection?

There's not a lot of information regarding the SFOS XF Firewall installed on an older UTM 110/120 appliance.

Currently I'm using a VMWare virtual machine, but I'd like to have a dedicated appliance.
For about £100, I can pick up either a UTM 110/120 or a UTM 220 (without SSD).

As the UTM 220 is physically bigger and consumes more electricity, I'd like to know if I can get away with a UTM 110/120 appliance without bottlenecking my internet connection.

I have a line that maxes out at 70Mb/s download and 20Mb/s upload.

Finally, it is possible to install SFOS XG Firewall and activate a Home license on both of these appliances, right?

Thanks

  • Hi,

I have installed the software version of XG firewall in a UTM120 (rev5) with a home license.

My current internet speed is a fiber connection with 100 Mbps up and 20 mbps down.

With IPS, webscanning and dual AV activated, the UTM120 with XG fully maxes out my internet uplink: around 115 Mbps up and 25 Mbps down.

  • Hello,

    Thanks for your reply.

    How do I know if it's a UTM 110 or a UTM 120? The product lists it as a UTM 110/120 Rev.5?
I want it to be the UTM 120, not the UTM 110 because it says that the upload bandwidth is limited to 4Mbps on the UTM 110 version.
The seller says they can't offer any support regarding the item other than it was removed from a working environment and re-imaged with UTM 9.5

If it's any help, here's a link to the item...

If this is exactly the same as your unit, then I'm guessing it's a UTM 120?

    Thanks

  • I have exactly the same hardware, so the speed should be fine.

Mine also shows 110/120. You can install XG firewall home license on it.

The constraints were in the days that sophos differentiated the speeds over several licenses.

  • Thanks for that info.

I was under the impression that anything other than the UTM 120 would enforce those limitations perhaps by having less RAM or maybe a slower CPU.

I've purchased it anyway, so I am guessing that it can run Home editions of either UTM 9.5 or XG Firewall. When I get the item, is it difficult to install the OS? I'm guessing these don't have a keyboard input, DVD drive or monitor output, so how is it done?

Once I've installed the OS on the appliance and configured it, would I then simply be able to restore a backup from a VM of either UTM 9.5 or XG Firewall directly to the physical appliance?

  • You can install it with a bootable usb stick.

It has VGA output and you can connect a keyboard.
