Troubleshooting 10GB SFP on XG230 with Flexiport

Hi,

I have a situation where we have a Extended Range SFP+ (10GB) connected via a Flexiport module in a Sophos XG 230 firewall. The SFP+ is connection via a SM patch cable to the ISP fibre connection. The firewall sees the Flexiport module ports but reports the port is 'unplugged'. Is there any error reporting /  troubleshooting steps I can do on the firewall to see if the SFP is at fault?

ISP saids the link is OK, but we might get that tested. I have replaced the fibre patch cable and tried swapping the Rx Tx fibre leads around on one end of the patch cable. The ER SFP+ is expensive so want to swap that as the last step.

Regards,

Malcolm

  • You should open immediatedly a Supportticket. In some Special Cases, there are some known combinations with SFP+, Modules and Appliances known to cause troubles.

In meantime, you can use folowing command to check, whether XG Firewall has recognized SFP+. If the Transceiver would not be recognized, you will see Speed: Unknown!, Duplex: Unknown!:

    SG210_WP01_SFOS 16.05.2 MR-2# ethtool Port1
    Settings for Port1:
    Supported ports: [ FIBRE ]
    Supported link modes:   1000baseT/Full
    10000baseT/Full
    Supported pause frame use: Symmetric
    Supports auto-negotiation: No
    Advertised link modes:  Not reported
    Advertised pause frame use: No
    Advertised auto-negotiation: No
    Speed: 10000Mb/s
    Duplex: Full
    Port: FIBRE
    PHYAD: 0
    Transceiver: external
    Auto-negotiation: off
    Supports Wake-on: g
    Wake-on: d
    Current message level: 0x0000000f (15)
           drv probe link timer
    Link detected: no
  • Thanks HuberChristian. My firewall does report Speed and Duplex as Unknown! for the FlexiPort module port PortA1

I will open a support case, we have been trying to find out through our supplier if this was supported but a support case sounds a better idea.

  • Same problem here: 4Port-NIC with 4 SFP+ Flexiport modules. Port 1 shows "unplugged" - Port 2,3,4 shows "connected".

After changes the NIC & the modules, the problem still exists... I think that not a hardware issue?

  • We're having nearly the exact same issue. I'd be interested to hear how it turned out for you if possible!
  • Hi Jeremy,

In our case the SFP+ was fine but it turned out that the ISP had used a SR/LR SFP (1GB) instead of the extended range SFP+ we were using. They insisted it was the right SFP module three times before actually checking and finding out the wrong one was used. So that was confusing the issue with the firewall as well.
